With more than 30 new works by 20 artists, the show proposes to examine the concept of the "institution" from a wider perspective and from within art itself; and through the new productions by the artists, attempts to render visible the tensions and dynamics between the art institution, the artist, the work of art and the viewer from different perspectives.
curated by Emre Baykal
Initiated by the Vehbi Koç Foundation, on May 2010, ARTER’s new exhibition opens on 28
November. Curated by Emre Baykal, “Second Exhibition” includes more than 30 new works
by 20 artists: .-_-., Halil Altındere, Burak Arıkan, Volkan Aslan, Vahap Avşar, Banu
Cennetoğlu – Yasemin Özcan Kaya, Ayşe Erkmen, Hafriyat (Murat Akagündüz,
Antonio Cosentino, extrastruggle, İnci Furni, Mustafa Pancar), Ali Kazma, Aydan
Murtezaoğlu – Bülent Şangar, Ahmet Öğüt, İz Öztat, Cengiz Tekin and Canan Tolon.
ARTER had opened with the exhibition “Starter”. Curated by René Block, the exhibition
comprised of works that belong to the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection.
“Second Exhibition” is not a collection-based exhibition; instead, it consists of works that are
specifically produced for the exhibition. In this regard, “Second Exhibition” harbingers
ARTER’s forthcoming programme that is conceived in line with its salient aim of
encouraging artistic production in Turkey.
“Second Exhibition” departs from the lack so far of sufficient institutional and sustainable
response to the urgent requirement for support towards artistic production despite the rapid
growth of contemporary art in Turkey, and proposes a fresh look at the “institution” via new
productions it has facilitated. The shared context of these new works is constructed around the
concepts of the institution and institutionalisation in a wider framework with art at its centre.
ARTER’s “Second Exhibition”, which assumes as a title its chronological order among
exhibitions organised here, seeks to evoke the sequentiality within the programme of artistic
events at an art institution as well as an institutional continuity. It also ironically references
the criterion of an art institution’s success usually associated with numerical values rather
than the content produced.
“Second Exhibition” presents works that are specifically produced for the exhibition, with
three exceptions: Halil Altındere’s “Portrait of a Dealer”, Ahmet Öğüt’s “Black Diamond”
and Vahap Avşar’s “Last Drop” have been included in the exhibition in view of the
connection between these works and the exhibition’s context and since their format allow a
second edition.
Emre Baykal explains the shared context of the works as such: “In consideration of the
processes of restructuring and transformation that Turkey is passing through in the 2000s and
that are also observable in art institutions, the shared context of these new works consists of
the concepts of the institution and institutionalisation in a framework with art at its centre.
"Second Exhibition" proposes to examine the concept of the "institution" from a wider
perspective and from within art itself; and through the new productions by the artists, attempts
to render visible the tensions and dynamics between the art institution, the artist, the work of
art and the viewer from different perspectives.”
Two books are to be published within the scope of the “Second Exhibition”. The first book,
titled Second Exhibition Book 1/2 includes Emre Baykal's comprehensive conceptual
framework text along with images and illustrations representing the works’ production
processes.
The second book of the exhibition is scheduled to be published in January 2011 and will
comprise of independent sections dedicated to each artist and their project(s) in the exhibition
along with installation photos taken following the exhibition's opening.
