Today, reality is mirrored in ever more and ever new images. It appears on television, on CCTV screens and mobile phone displays. But what reality are these media reflecting? Does any one valid depiction of reality exist? One basis for capturing reality is the documentary film. What role does this film category play in the 21st century?

This, the first exhibition on the documentary film at an art museum in Germany, unites 88 films associated with the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) made over the past ten years. As an exhibition project at the Pinakothek der Moderne, expression is being lent to the growing importance of the film medium in the visual arts. The project highlights the diversity of a field in which the university has gained such a high standing and continues to draw international attention to this day. The film-makers and locations of their works are equally international.

At the heart of this presentation is a film category which consciously places no expectations on its subject matter. Marked by subjectivity and a lack of preconceived ideas this attitude is similarly reflected in the procedures and creative processes adopted by contemporary artists. The documentary film can also be seen as an artistic pictorial means in which the content is neither typical nor is there a universal narrative form. This undogmatic approach is the real subject that marks the documentary film and links it to the visual arts.

Eight perspectives provide varied points of access to the characteristics of the documentary film: the sections ‘Search’, ‘Diary’, ‘Arena’, ‘Distance’, ‘Ritual’, ‘Conflict’, ‘Borders’ and ‘Divergence’ bring clarity to specific approaches, challenges and methods. By selecting from a number of different menus visitors are invited to navigate their way through a film exhibition environment extending over 700 square metres. A filmic generation portrait can be seen in a special room installation with 64 projection screens.

The HFF’s relocation to premises next to the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich’s ‘Kunstareal’ museum complex is the immediate reason behind the exhibition. The HFF is one of the major universities for film in Germany and will be moving into the new building in summer 2011.

A series of talks will be held parallel to the exhibition. The focus will be on established film-makers. Discussions and film screenings will heighten an awareness for the importance of the documentary film today. Prominent guests invited include former students of the HFF such as Doris Dörrie, Thomas Riedelsheimer, Hans-Christian Schmid, Hito Steyerl and Wim Wenders, as well as the multimedia artists Christian Jankowski and Paul Pfeiffer.

An exhibition catalogue will be published with numerous illustrations, essays by the curators and related commentaries by 70 contributing authors, including Lars Brandt, Ulrich Enzensberger, Dieter Kronzucker, Fritz Pleitgen, Gerd Ruge, Simone Stewens and Uwe Timm.
