Everything here turns around the central question: what if only those could speak who utter the truth? The exhibition presents examples of media reporting (for example, the so-called Mohammed caricatures from a Danish newspaper), historical events (for example, the Black Power Movement and the Free Speech Movement in the USA) and artistic positions in relation with and to one another. Contemporary in the Showroom: Gruppenbild by Shirin Homann-Saadat, and the Video of the Month 5 by Wael Shawky.

The exhibition Freedom of Speech questions and analyzes the concept of freedom of speech and the role it plays in Western democracy.
Together with the Duisburger Institut für Sprach und Sozialforschung (DISS), the artistic statements will be examined by way of the principle and concept of parrhesia for their truth-value in terms of discourse analysis. For the exhibition, the method of critical discourse analysis is placed like a foil on the linguistic and visual level of media reports and artistic works. They play an important role in the constitution of everyday knowledge and thus should be placed equally alongside one another. Alongside works that explore the right to freedom of speech, the exhibition also gathers works that survey its content or form the limits and possibilities of the freedom of speech and expression.
Freedom of Speech is a cooperation between Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and Kunstverein Hamburg (December 18, 2010–March 13, 2011) in collaboration with Duisburger Institut.
