Chisenhale opens ifs Doors
Chisenhale will be flinging its doors open to the public for its annual
open weekend. This is an exciting opportunity for the public to meet
with artists and performers, take part in workshops, view individual
artists work, see the exhibition in the Gallery, watch performances in
the Dance Space and see the workings of an established arts studio group.
Chisenhale Art Place (Chisenhale Studios) was created by a group of
visual artists who in 1980 converted a derelict veneer factory into a
thriving arts complex. Forty artist studios were built, a collective
of experimental dance artists was invited to share the available space
and the Gallery was founded. Through the provision of secure, affordable
workspace the studios have helped many artists to establish themselves,
many of whom have become internationally renowned and many have their
work in national collections. Artists who have benefited from the studio
provision at Chisenhale have included Anthony Gormley, Richard Wilson,
Rose Finn-Kelsey, Hew Locke, Ron Haselden, Matthew Collings and
Madeleine Strindberg.
Chisenhale Art Place is currently working, with
the support of Tower Hamlets Council, to secure the long term future of
the three charities within the building.
During the open weekend there will be 2 children's workshops on Saturday
and Sunday at 1.30 and 3.00 pm.

Notes:
Chisenhale Gallery became a charity in 1993 having developed into an
established gallery with an international reputation. It is a large
publicly funded space dedicated to profiling UK and internationally
based emerging artists. Presenting around 7 projects each year the
gallery focuses on commissioning new works, offering support to artists
at a crucial stage in their career and a challenging exhibition
programme for a diverse audience. Chisenhale Gallery has exhibited many
artists who have subsequently become nominees and winners of renowned
artists' prizes and awards.
During the Open Weekend London based artist Marion Coutts will be
exhibiting Cult a new installation exploring the forces of group
psychology. Alluring and haunting, Cult uses video and sculptural
elements to investigate the phenomenon of the outsider encountering the
group. The gallery will organise talks on the exhibition on Saturday and
Sunday of the Open Weekend.

Chisenhale Dance Space is a unique and thriving resource for dance. It
is dedicated to the support of experimentation, research and training in
a wide variety of dance forms, actively involving artists in all areas
of its organisation. Rehearsal studios are available and dancers have
the opportunity to run research projects through the Artists Programme.
In addition to providing exhibition, research and development facilities
the three organisations run successful education programmes. Local
schools, colleges, community groups, residents and the general public
have access to unique educational experiences and arts activities
through the provision of outreach work, schools projects, in house
workshops and exhibitions.
