In the exhibition project, contemporary works of art are on display in interaction with the city: video and light installations in the squares, in containers, on screens and building facades in the city. Contemporary art is brought to the city, public spaces and the community with the intention of artistically activating the urban environment. Into the Light focuses on the status of the image and its complex interaction with its environment. The works consist of an eclectic collection of unique and occasionally strong images.

The third edition of Into the light is an international exhibition project by the nomadic initiative ERROR ONE, with video and light installations on public display in Antwerp South, in collaboration with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, MIDDELHEIMPRODUCTION, M HKA, Cinema Zuid, AIR and several galleries: 12x24x36, Galerie Christian Nagel, Galerie Micheline Szwajcer, Koraalberg Gallery, Stella Lohaus Gallery, Tim Van Laere Gallery, Xavier Hufkens.
In this exhibition project, contemporary works of art are on display in interaction with the city: video and light installations in the squares, in containers, on screens and building façades in the city. Contemporary art is brought to the city, public spaces and the community with the intention of artistically activating the urban environment. Into the light will be held during the month of December, an ideal moment to both literally and figuratively brighten the city: Into the light will serve to counteract the darkness and answers our need for light in the shortest and darkest days of the year.
Into the Light focuses on the status of the image and its complex interaction with its environment. The works consist of an eclectic collection of unique and occasionally strong images. The works brought together here question how we view reality and challenge the viewer to take another look at reality, or to see it in a different way. The medium of light serves as the unifying element among the different works.
The Leopold De Waelplaats and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (Keren Cytter, Mark Lewis) serve as the center of gravity of this art tour. On the museum square, works will be on diplay from: the Egyptian artist Doa Aly, Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen, Nicole Bauwens, Edith Dekyndt, Sarah De Wilde, Filip Gilissen, Matt Stokes, Monique Thomaes, Tim Vets, and Dutch artist Henk Visch. Following the trajectory, the tour will take us past the presentation space of Vooruitzicht NV in the Museumstraat (Ann Veronica Janssens, ). Next we have Koraalberg Gallery where the light installation Luz by Carla Arocha is on display. Stella Lohaus Gallery presents the work of Kati Heck in the gallery showcase; for this occasion, the gallery space itself has been lent to ERROR ONE for the presentation of the work Bolero by the Belgian artist Francis Alÿs, who lives in Mexico. Micheline Szwajcer is showing work by Ann Veronica Jansssens.
Video works by Anouk De Clercq will be projected onto the high terrace walls of the M HKA. On the tall walls of the M HKA, close by the quays, the perplexing, seminal work Tell by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm can be seen, a foretaste of the large solo exhibition of the artist that the Middelheimmuseum is organizing in 2011. In the Zuiderpershuis, MIDDELHEIMPRODUCTION, another collaborative partner of Into the Light, provides their own contribution to the project in the form of external project from the Middelheim-museum. Four artists have been invited to contribute to this presentation: Thomas Bakker, Oscar Hugal, Ermias & Daphne. These artists also work with the medium of installation, light or video, and bring our relationship with ‘the everyday’ sharply into focus. What you see is not necessarily what others see.
The presentations in public spaces are taking place from the 9th to the 19th of December 2010, between six and ten o’clock in the evening, and are free for everyone to see. The indoors locations, including KMSKA, Cinema Zuid, Zuiderpershuis, Galerie Micheline Szwajcer and Stella Lohaus Gallery are accessible during the opening hours of the participating institutions and galleries. ERROR ONE is a nomadic initiative for contemporary art and it develops projects that are not bound to a fixed space. This nomadic approach creates an inextricable link between context, location, content and dialogue.
