Group show. "If admiration is the catalyst of our practice (a curator is above all a professional admirer), it is also the mainspring of art history, i.e., the admiration artists have for their teachers, the wonder that pushes them to imitate, repeat, or copy. But it is also a research topic that goes beyond the art world, namely the admiration one feels for another, for an act or a story." Isabelle Le Normand and Florence Ostende

This letter could have started out like any other fan letter, with a neatly turned opening about how much we admire your work. The present subject, however, is in fact admiration itself, that vital force that pushes us to act, infuses us with courage, and keeps us standing, enthusiastic, driven, dogged, obstinate and true to our convictions. We would like to invite you to take part in a project we’ve dreamt of for several years now, a show titled "Qui admirez-vous?" (Who do you admire?).
If admiration is the catalyst of our practice (a curator is above all a professional admirer), it is also the mainspring of art history, i.e., the admiration artists have for their teachers, the wonder that pushes them to imitate, repeat, or copy. But it is also a research topic that goes beyond the art world, namely the admiration one feels for another, for an act or a story. We see admiration as a driving force, a feeling that generates ideas and desires.
A religious icon, a piece of fan fiction, a cathedral, an ode, a portrait, a turn at karaoke, a biography, a round of applause, a love song—the forms admiration can take are limitless; it is an imprecise sensation, one that is always directed towards others, turned outwards, an ode to perseverance. For this project we are inviting artists who we feel are motivated by admiration and enthusiasm, almost as a way of life.
"Qui admirez-vous ?" assumes its full meaning within a school in connection with the students there. These young people are in the middle of finding their own models and going through a stage where they are discovering their intellectual guides in order to imitate them, draw inspiration from them, and later move beyond their influence. La Box will allow us to launch this joint endeavor within the context of the school while at the same time being able to step outside of it. The exhibition space, with its street-level windows, is located right in the center of town and closely connected to everyday life and people going about their business.
Your energy, your mood, your absolute need to create your art lead us to believe that this project is likely to spark not a little enthusiasm in you. We would be honored to talk to you about it personally.
Warmest regards,
Isabelle Le Normand and Florence Ostende
