comunicato stampa

ADN Galería presents a double show with the projects Ser y Durar by Democracia and XX by Regina José Galindo (in collaboration with Prometeogallery di Ida Pisani).

Democracia is a duo formed in 2006 by Pablo España and Iván López, founders and members of El Perro collective (1989-2006). This artist group’s statement defines their work in a very clear way: “the decision to work as a group springs from the intention of engaging in an artistic practice centred on discussion and the clash of ideas and forms of action”.

In this occasion, the project Ser y Durar is made of eleven photographs representing different graves in Madrid’s La Almudena Civil Cemetery. These pictures perpetuate tombstones of deceased, so that their anonymities can revive “the memory of fighters from armies, and social and political organizations who aspired to a utopia driven by humanist values, while Modernity’s great narratives of emancipation still made sense.” (Piedad Solans, Contra el Público). The only thing left are their epitaphs: “Don’t shed tears over my death / Continue the fight / Onward forever / Over the graves”, “There is nothing after death”.

Regina José Galindo began her performing activity in the mid-90’s willing to criticize contemporary society’s cynicism and hypocrisy. Her work is mostly about Guatemala’s political repression, gender-based violence and mistreatment or the officially sanctioned torture.

The core of the project XX is the idea and the perception of death in human existence and philosophy. Everyday in Guatemala two to four corpses are buried as XX, unknown. The act of setting gravestones was made aiming to give a place to these human beings in their death. 52 gravestones were placed in the cemetery of La Verbena in Guatemala, partially modifying the space. Under each gravestone there is a body that once was alive. No one knows his name or his face, but nobody could deny his existence. The earth won’t swallow his rests. Somebody was, somebody existed.
