Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent are home to a vibrant young art scene whose artists frequently cross paths with their German peers, whether in the studios and art academies there or in Düsseldorf and Berlin. Though these artists have close ties to the artistic traditions of their native Belgium and Holland, the boundaries separating them are fluid.
German-Belgian artist Felicitas Rohden, has worked as a curator since graduating from the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie in 2008. She visited the ateliers of her fellow artists in Belgium and the Netherlands, and along with Gertrud Peters, invited a number of sculptors and photographers to show their latest works at KIT - Kunst im Tunnel.
Among the artists featured is Rinus Van de Velde, an up-and-coming star of the art scene in his native Belgium who is still little known in Germany. Sometimes referred to as a "sculptor on paper", Van de Velde will transform KIT with his monumental charcoal drawings. In his subtle, enigmatic installations, Freek Wambacq links everyday life and cultural history, playing with images that tap into viewers' collective consciousness. On the night of the opening, Dennis Tyfus will perform with his Ultra Eczema record label alongside Hedwig Houben, another Düsseldorf Kunstakademie graduate.
