Especially for this exhibition Wilkes has produced an ambitious new work, but has also explored a more retrospective approach. In addition her private archive will be displayed, shown for the first time in public. Important themes in her work are memory and loss, her artistic vocabulary can be described as unapologetic and features the most abject and awkward of domestic, everyday objects.
Kunstverein München e.V. presents the first comprehensive solo exhibition outside the UK of Glasgow based artist Cathy Wilkes (*1966). Born and raised in Belfast, Wilkes is one of a generation of artists who was educated in Glasgow and emerged at the forefront of British visual arts practice ever since the 1990s (nominated for the Turner Prize 2008).
Despite the fact that Wilkes is known to make new works for each exhibition, this particular exhibition offers an exception. Especially for this exhibition Wilkes has produced an ambitious new work, but has also explored a more retrospective approach. In addition her private archive will be displayed, shown for the first time in public. Hence, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to examine important themes in the work of Wilkes – such as memory and loss – within the broader context of her oeuvre and artistic practice.
The artistic vocabulary of Cathy Wilkes can be best described as unapologetic and features the most abject and awkward of domestic, everyday objects.
The solo show of Cathy Wilkes at Kunstverein München e.V. is produced in collaboration with GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle in Bremen. The exhibition will be on show in Bremen from November this year.
