Andisheh Avini

I-20 is pleased to announce Andisheh Avini's fifth exhibition at the gallery.

For this exhibition, Avini reveals new closely connected bodies of work where common themes subtly emerge. In these series he discovers new ways of exploring post-painterly ideas about abstraction and minimalism through mediums familiar to the artist.

In past exhibitions the artist has made use of a variety of mediums: including silkscreen, collage, marquetry, bleach, and gold leaf - the subject frequently being drawn from the extensive trove of art history. He has explored abstraction through paintings with bleach on canvas. Avini also explored Pop Art ideas when he appropriated imagery of a Revolution repeated in a variety of silkscreen inks on canvas; and with his re-embellishment of familiar objects.

Currently the front gallery contains a grouping of elegantly patterned golden geometrical pieces. On closer inspection the motifs are at once recognizable and foreign. Avini's re-appropriation of modernist geometry invests it with golden khatam marquetry, creating an almost mosaic to re-explore line, geometric shape, and border. In these compositions he stays within the predetermined boundaries, yet renews the timeless energy of the lines.

An undercurrent of the show is the artist's adroit ability to filter ideas about appropriation and modern art back and forth between different mediums while recombining them. Inhabiting the main gallery is a set of large paintings on canvas dominated by black-and-white with punctuations of color. These works combine Avini's understanding of patterning and his approach to creating abstraction. Quite distinctively each painting is framed by a neat border of Persian khatam motif laid upon the canvas through inkjet print. Challenging these established borders, however, are outbursts of lines accumulated from a layering of scribbled silkscreen inks.

Avini's recent exhibition, "Screw, Spread, Slip, Suck, Stab, Fall, Cross and Writhe", opend last autumn at Half Gallery, New York. Other solo exhibitions include Sarah Gavlak Projects, Palm Beach; Feinkost Gallery, Berlin; and Alberto Peola Arte Contemporanea, Turin, Italy. Avini was born in New York City in 1974 and educated at Hunter College. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
