Consciousness. Meditation. Watcher on the Hills. The exhibition exemplifies the artist's ongoing preoccupation with the nature of human consciousness. It includes 36 Date Paintings, one for each year since 1966 when the artist began this extraordinary series. These are complemented by a rarely seen early drawing, Sundays of 100 Years.
First & Second Floor Galleries
This is the most comprehensive exhibition of work by On Kawara in the UK to date. It exemplifies the artist's ongoing preoccupation with the nature of human consciousness. It includes 36 Date Paintings, one for each year since 1966 when the artist began this extraordinary series - and each having been painted on a Sunday. These are complemented by a rarely seen early drawing, Sundays of 100 Years.
Also included are more than 150 telegrams sent by the artist to friends and colleagues since 1970, bearing just the message 'I am still alive' as if to imply the opposite may have been the case. One Million Years - Past and One Million Years - Future (1980) are two complementary works listing the passage of time across thousands of pages. Here the length of an average human life is equivalent to a few lines and human history to a few pages.
Accompanying the exhibition will be an installation in Ikon's Tower consisting solely of the recorded sound of two people reading from One Million Years - Past and One Million Years - Future.
Organised in collaboration with Le Consortium, Dijon, Consciousness. Meditation. Watcher on the Hills will tour in a clockwise direction around the world during the next three years.

Stacked Hotel Room No.10 (Edgbaston Palace Hotel, Birmingham)
20 November 2002 - 26 January 2003
Ikon Tower
Working in collaboration, British artists Adam Dade and Sonya Hanney have developed a practice in which they covertly reorganise the furniture and fittings of hotel rooms into a sculptural assemblage. The process and finished work is documented with photography and video, before the hotel room is returned to its original condition. In addition to this video screening, Ikon is publishing a book documenting all ten Stacked Hotel Rooms undertaken by the artists to date.
