The Approach is pleased to announce the opening of 'Rise and Fall', Tim Stoner's second exhibition at the gallery. The paintings present images of fellowship and resolve, reflecting communities involved in ceremony and rituals.
Stoner draws on archetypal iconography to depict groups of figures woven into pictorial and social constructs. Works in the show include 'Tower', in which figures assemble to form a human high-rise, a metaphor for support and hierarchy, where the group are dependent on the strength of the lower strata to prevent those at the top from falling. 'Smoke' portrays a couple caught in each other's gaze, visually bound together by a hazy polluted glow; they are emotionally united within this visual entanglement.
Bathed in an over-exposure of light and silhouetted against a strong glare, Stoner's figures materialise between the light and shadow of the sun, they project an atmosphere and emotion whilst upholding the modernist notion of pictorial unity. The built up veils of colour and light obscure the features of individuals, yet beneath the unified surface details emerge. The use of filtration and layers of shifted colour echo the aesthetic of 3D films and the nostalgic images of historical reproductions. These multiple references play with generality and confuse signals of time, location and place in order to reconfigure our codes of recognition towards a universal motif.
Recent solo exhibitions include;`The Power of Partnership', Stedelljk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam, 2002; 'Natives' Kerstin Engholm Gallerie, Vienna, 2001. Recent group shows; 'The Leisure Society', De Vleeshal, Middleburg, NL, 2001; 'Becks Futures', ICA, London and touring (1st prize), 2001.
