November 23rd 2002 - February 2nd 2003
The Caldic Collectie of
twentieth-century art, collected by Joop van Caldenborgh, is characterised by
its boldness, originality, diversity and above all, quality. It is attracting
keen international interest and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum is to present
a major overview of this unique collection for the first time.
The title of the exhibition - 'IMAGINE, YOU ARE STANDING HERE IN FRONT OF ME' -
is taken from a work by Re'my Zaugg. A key aspect of the exhibition is the
interesting contrast between abstract and figurative art, as expressed in the
works of Jan Schoonhoven and Philip Akkerman. Schoonhoven's work is monochrome
and almost scientific whilst Akkerman expresses his creativity in a nigh
interminable series of figurative self portraits.

Photography will be another main theme, with a major overview of the history of
photography from Man Ray through to Rineke Dijkstra. A widely diverse range is
collected at Caldic, from 19th century pioneer work to early 20th-century
experiments.
A special feature will be the presence of historic and modern 'magic show-boxes'
by Joseph Cornell. His ordinary objects take on a surrealistic quality. It is
only natural to display his work in combination with the boxes made by Marcel
Duchamp.
Larger groups of work by a number of artists will be exhibited, such as the
complete graphic works of Marcel Broodthaers and work by Mona Hatoum on a scale
never before seen in the Netherlands. Large installations from Joseph Grigely
and Sam Taylor-Wood, will be constructed for the occasion. Finally, a selection
of outdoor sculptures will be displayed both inside and outside the Museum,
featuring artists such as Richard Artschwager and Juan Munoz.
Press preview November 22nd:
At 10:30 a.m., Mr Chris Dercon, director of the Museum, will open the press
preview with an introduction after which Mr Joop van Caldenborgh (Caldic
Collectie) will make a few explanatory remarks on the collection.
A complimentary lunch will be served after the preview.
