What does it mean to enact a populist political strategy through an art practice? As part of the project Enacting Populism – that runs in several formats and in different institutions until February 2012 – a panel of artists will address this and other questions inherent to the populist zeitgeist.
Enacting Populism started its research phase in the frame of the AIR Residency in Antwerp. Within this residency program Matteo Lucchetti, curator of the project, has invited three artists - Francisco Camacho, Luigi Coppola and Danilo Correale - to share this research phase with him and to work on their individual contributions in relation to it.
This residency will have a final outcome scheduled for the 3rd of May at Extra City Kunsthal Antwerpen, in the frame of the Extra Academy series, in which an artists' panel will gather the contributions by several artists that have actively reflected with their visual research on the current forms in which the political sphere represent itself in the mediascape, having often considered specifically the populist movements as a main subject. This public meeting is structured as a workshop, in which the confrontation of the different strategies and researches can lead to a debate around the possibilities for the artistic practices to deal with the ongoing populist dimension of western democracies.
In the title Enacting Populism lays the ways in which the project wants to create a relation with this contemporary populist condition of Europe. ‘Enact’ means to make a plan realized, to carry it on but also to make a representation of this plan, to interpret it. These are the two dynamics that the project follows, having always a double level with which to deal with the concept of populism.
