International Festival of Arts & Ideas
The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, Connecticut's
premier
showcase of the performing arts, the visual arts and the exploration of ideas,
is
expanding this year to New London and Stamford. To allow the Festival to
establish
itself in its new extended format, Festival Director Paul Collard has extended
his
contract until the summer of 2001.
The Festival will open on Friday, June 16 and run through Saturday, July 1,
2000.
Programming will take place throughout these 16 days in New Haven, from June
20 to
24 in Stamford, and from June 27 to July 1 in New London.
The extension of the International Festival to Stamford is an initiative of
the Stamford
Cultural Development Corporation, whose Executive Director; Juliana Sciolla
has
collaborated on the development of Stamford's program. The program will
include,
Guilio Cesare (Julius Caesar) at the Rich Forum directed by the brilliant
enfant terrible
of European theater, Romeo Castellucci. Hugo and Ines, the enchanting mime and
puppet company who enthralled last year's Festival audiences, will reinforce
the strong
family content of the program. In addition to jazz concerts, the streets of
Stamford will
come alive in the evenings with free outdoor concerts and street theatre. The
Festival
will open in Stamford on Tuesday 20 June with a Gala presentation of the US
premiere
of the acclaimed one man show, Shakespeare's Villains, performed by one of
England's greatest actors and directors of Shakespeare, Steven Berkoff.
"We are delighted to have attracted the International Festival to Stamford,
"said Mayor
Dannel P. Malloy. "The arts have a unique role to play in building communities
and
powering the economies of our cities. For this reason, I have committed
Stamford to a
series of initiatives aimed at showcasing the artistic qualities of this city,
reaching out to
all our communities and reinforcing pride in our downtown. Establishing a
major
International Festival in Stamford is one more step towards achieving these
goals."
Governor John Rowland is pleased that the Festival has been successful enough
to
expand to three cities. "I have been impressed by the Festival's ability over
the last
four years to make a significant economic contribution to the City of New
Haven while
building community pride and strengthening social cohesion," said Governor
Rowland.
"I have given great priority in this term to supporting the arts and
revitalizing
Connecticut's major cities, and recognize the Festival's potential to
contribute to this
joint agenda."
In addition to championing the arts throughout the State, making the arts in
Connecticut the best supported in the nation, Governor Rowland has placed
great
emphasis on the value of working collaboratively to harness the State's
resources. "It
gives me great pleasure to see three of Connecticut's major cities
collaborating on this
initiative, which in addition to bringing world-class entertainment to people
within the
State, will help establish Connecticut as one of the top arts destinations in
the US."
"I am delighted to be staying on to oversee the expansion of the
International
Festival," said Paul Collard. "By collaborating with Stamford and New London
we will be
able to deliver a richer program, attain a higher profile, and attract a much
broader
audience."
