A new international art event celebrates its debut

Art Basel Miami Beach - the event the art world eagerly awaits - will take place for the first time from December 5 to 8, 2002, as the sister event of Art Basel (Switzerland), the world’s most important art show. Art Basel Miami Beach is a new kind of art event, which combines an art fair with an exciting program of special exhibits, visits to private art collections and crossover events featuring music, film, fashion, architecture and design. At the heart of the event are the 155 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and Asia which will exhibit visual art from the 20th and 21st centuries. There will also be individual presentations by young artists, a video lounge, a sculpture park, and art projects in public spaces around Miami Beach. Young avant-garde galleries will have the opportunity to exhibit works in renovated ships’ containers transformed into mobile exhibition spaces on the beach. The list of participants for this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach is still more star-studded. 95% of the galleries admitted in 2001 re-applied after the postponement of the premiere of Art Basel Miami Beach on account of the tragic events of September 11. The advent of prominent newcomers means that almost all the world’s important contemporary art galleries will be present at Art Basel Miami Beach. Last year, the New York Times termed the new event: «What is sure to be the hottest contemporary art fair in America» and Samuel Keller, Director of Art Basel Miami Beach, added: «And this year it is going to be even hotter.»

Collectors, gallery owners, artists, curators, critics and art lovers have a new winter destination. The International Art Show, Art Basel Miami Beach will take place for the first time from December 5 to 8, 2002 in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. Guests from all over the world are invited to the glamorous opening night, which will take place one day before the show opens.

Right from the outset, its star-studded cast list makes Art Basel Miami Beach the most prestigious art show for contemporary art on the American continent. 155 renowned galleries (list of participants:
www.artbasel.com/art_basel/galleries) from all the world’s most important art metropolises will exhibit at this new art show. 66 are from the USA and Canada, 75 from Europe, 10 from Latin America, 3 from Asia and one from South Africa.

Following the postponement of last year’s premiere on account of the tragic events of September 11, the Show Management and the Selection Committee – consisting of the renowned art dealers Jane Corkin (Jane Corkin Gallery, Toronto), David Juda (Annely Juda Fine Art, London), Dr. Ursula Krinzinger (Galerie Krinzinger Wien), Lawrence Luhring (Luhring Augustine, New York), Mary-Anne Martin (Mary-Anne Fine Art, New York), Lucy Mitchell-Innes (Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York), Tim Neuger (neugerriemschneider, Berlin), Shaun Caley Regen (Regen Projects, Los Angeles), Angel Samblancat (Prats/Polígrafa, Barcelona), Frederic Snitzer (Frederic Snitzer Gallery, Miami), Luisa Strina (Galería Luisa Strina Sao Paulo) – together decided to simplify this year’s selection procedure. Those galleries admitted for the year 2001 were automatically selected for this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach. 95% of last year’s participants re-applied, with the result that only few vacant places remained for new galleries. The Show Management nonetheless received a further 100 applications, over and above the 400 requests that poured in last year. Management and Selection Committee agreed that the number of booths should only be increased slightly. The inclusion of the newly admitted galleries makes the list of participants still more star-studded than last year’s. Samuel Keller, Director of Art Basel Miami Beach, summarizes the results of the selection meetings held in New York in early March as follows: «Almost all of the world’s most important gal-leries for contemporary art will be present at Art Basel Miami Beach. That the new art show should be the best on the American continent right from its debut event is just amazing.»

Art Basel Miami Beach’s exhibits and events are located in the charming Art Deco District of Miami Beach. The centerpiece is the International Art Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Here, over 100 of the world’s leading galleries, such as Marian Goodman, Barbara Gladstone, Luhring Augustine, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Max Hetzler, Jay Jopling, Yvon Lambert, Donald Young, David Zwirner, Lisson, Gavin Brown’s enterprise, Schipper & Krome, 303, Regen Projects, Perrotin, Tanja Bonakdar, Tomio Koyama, Juana de Aizpuru, Victoria Miro and many others present today’s most respected and most sought-after artists. From among the new applicants the Selection Committee chose the following galleries: Taka Ishii Gallery, Andrea Rosen, Kukje Gallery, Claes Nordenhake, Anthony Reynolds, Massimo de Carlo, P.P.O.W. Gallery, Christian Nagel and Christina Guerra. The famous dealers in the classics of the 20th century unquestionably serve as examples for the younger generation of gallery owners. 30 of them, including the legendary art dealers Jan Krugier, Richard Gray, Ernst Beyeler, Achim Moeller, Annely Juda, Mitchell-Innes & Nash and Mary-Anne Martin are represented at Art Basel Miami Beach. They are joined this year by Robert Landau and Leslie Waddington. All show rare works and highlights of the 20th century. The 10 best galleries were selected from Latin America, four of them from Mexico, four from Brazil and one each from Argentina and Costa Rica. Also counting the European and North American galleries specializing in Latin American artists, the Caribbean and South American art scene will be represented by dozens of galleries.

All the media – paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs, publications, performance, digital and video art – may be viewed and purchased. Prices begin at a few hundred dollars for multiples and works by young artists, and range all the way to million-dollar museum masterpieces.

At Art Basel Miami Beach, young artists have the opportunity to present their work in one-person shows. These artists will be re-presented by their galleries in «Art Statements», the sector which, at Art Basel, has jump-started the careers of many young artists over the years. «Art Statements» provides galleries with a platform guaranteeing a high degree of attention from collectors, curators and the media – at greatly reduced rates. When making its choice for this sector, the Selection Committee focused primarily on artists who are not yet well-known or who are not easily represented. Apart from those artists selected last year, this year sees the addition of Michel Groisman (Galeria Baró Senna), MR (Tomio Koyama Gallery), Candice Breitz (Galleria Francesca Kaufmann) Elisa Sighicelli, (Galleria Giò Marconi), Javier Téllez (Serge Ziegler Galerie) and Alessandro Pessoli (Anton Kern Gallery). Of the 19 artists, four are from the USA, two each come from Japan, Great Britain, Italy, Germany and Switzerland, and one each from South Africa, Brazil, Nigeria, Spain and Venezuela.

Of course, promotional programs rely heavily on the support and commitment of sponsors. The main sponsor of Art Basel Miami Beach is the UBS Financial Services Group. UBS, as a Financial Services Group, has a special interest to promote art and culture. This follows the bank's philosophy already well known for their commitment to the arts. Since 1994 UBS has been the main sponsor of Art Basel in Switzerland, the world’s most important fair for modern and contemporary art. During these seven years of working together the partnership has proven to be a very successful one. UBS has a strong tradition of sponsorship in which both the sponsor and the project owner act as partners to develop common ideas and grow together. UBS wants to combine the financial with a cultural commitment and to take on longterm responsibility in projects that are meaningful to the society. Sharing strong sustainable values such as teamwork, high standards of quality, dedication and innovation, Art Basel Miami Beach is pleased to have UBS as main sponsor for the new international art show.

Major international art journals, an art bookstore and cultural organizations from North and Latin America not only further broaden the information on offer at the central exhibition hall of the Miami Beach Convention Center, but also play an important role in the communication of contemporary art.

«Art Positions», one of the most sensational satellite exhibits of the new art show, is located right on the beach, just a few minutes’ walk from the Convention Center. Young galleries, whose budgets do not yet allow them to participate in international art shows, will be taking advantage of an interesting and economical presentation form for new art. Working together with the young architects Steinmann & Schmid, Art Basel Miami Beach has developed mobile exhibition spaces in the form of refurbished shipping containers. Grouped into a small container village, they will undoubtedly attract a great deal of public attention. The following galleries are appearing on this platform:
Air de Paris Paris

Other exceptional art projects in public spaces around Miami Beach («Art Projects») will be presented in various sites throughout the Art Deco District. Beautiful Collins Park, with its tropical trees, right by the Bass Museum of Art and just a few minutes’ walk from the Miami Beach Convention Center, offers an ideal platform for the display of sculpture («Art Sculpture Park»). Also in Collins Park, interested visitors can see video projections and a videothèque with a comprehensive program of works on video in the Rotunda of the Miami Beach Public Library. The «Art Video Lounge» is being created by LO/TEK of New York, the American avant-garde architects. «Art Sculpture Park», «Art Video-Lounge» and «Art Projects» are taking place in collaboration with the acclaimed American curator, James E. Rondeau of the Art Institute Chicago (see press release concerning: James E. Rondeau).

Miami is world famous as a center for fashion, design, music and film. In the visual arts, crossover with other art forms is as current as ever, and the program of Art Basel Miami Beach also includes crossover events and exhibits. «Art Loves Film» has scheduled the premiere of a feature film by a famous visual artist. «Art Loves Music» will present an extensive program in co-operation with the city of Miami Beach, ranging all the way from special appearances by the world famous New World Symphony Orchestra and the Miami Ballet, to salsa and pop concerts, and clubbing nights where visual artists double as DJs. In «Art Loves Architecture» prominent architects and collectors will discuss exhibition architecture for collectors. «Art Loves Design» is a public party with performances and exhibits in Miami’s neighboring Design District. «Art Loves Fashion» presents an haute-couture show, with a chief designer active in the worlds of art and fashion design.

Also being organized are interesting presentations by and for collectors («Art of Collecting»), visits to public and private art collec-tions and museums, exclusive receptions and wild parties. South Florida’s museums will be launching new top-flight exhibitions to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach – exhibitions which will complement the new art show and provide further draws for an international public. This year, too, the Host Committee founded last year in south Florida composed of over one hundred personalities from cultural, political and business life, offers its support to Art Basel Miami Beach and will help the city provide an especially warm welcome to exhibitors and guests. The Chairpersons are the collectors Irma & Norman Braman, the Honorary Chairman is the Mayor of Miami Beach, David Dermer. The Miami municipal government has declared its goal of making Art Basel Miami Beach a highlight of the cultural and social life of both Americas. Many important museums in the USA will be organizing trips to Miami, and numerous art collectors’ associations in Latin America and Europe have already announced their visits. The organizers are expecting at least 15,000 visitors.
