galerie wieland is pleased to announce "Holy Spirits," a group show of four
artists featuring artworks that manifest various aspects of religious
representation and objects. Questions concerning faith, worship and adoration
are posed, as well as diverse forms of sacral insignia.
Ulf Aminde builds shrines where terms like "appointment," "contacts," or
"profit" are offered for devotion or prayers. His "word shrines" were presented
this summer during the Berlin literature festival at various relevant places
throughout the Mitte area. In the present installation they have been
transferred from the public realm to the gallery space - thus becoming
reliquaries themselves.
Thomas Raschke, who presented three-dimensional drawings in the gallery last
year in his solo exhibition "wire frames," will show a group of new works:
"Monstrance," "Rosary," and "Reliquary" constitute empty shells and containers
made from simple soldered iron wire instead of the precious gold and gems
usually associated with such ecclesiastical objects.
The sculpture "Turk" by Yorgos Sapountzis resembles a piece of decorative
architecture – a cast showing a suffering face – rendered in shiny black fabric.
The agonized and tortured expression is amplified by the material and its
presentation. The head has been obsessively and painstakingly pinned together
with thousands of needles, allowing the object to retain its form and shifting
it into the realm of S&M and fetish.
Mara Wagenfuehr's paintings and installations take us back to our teenage
dreams. Recalling her own ecstatic youthful admiration for pop stars, she poses
them within altarpiece-like settings as if they were religious icons. Related to
the domestic shrines found in many traditional Mexican households, her canvases
are affectionately decorated with sequins, gold, glitter, feathers and
embroidery.
