Vivian Maier - A Life Uncovered
"Chicago nanny Vivian Maier died in 2009, leaving behind 100,000 negatives that no one but she had ever seen. Her work was discovered by chance, and now the photographs she took on her days off are being hailed as 'ranking up there' with the best in 20th-century street photography."
Hermione Hoby, the Guardian
An American of French and Austro-Hungarian extraction, Maier traveled between Europe and the United States before returning to New York City in 1951. Having picked up photography just two years earlier, she combed the streets of the Big Apple refining her artistic craft. In 1956 Maier left the East Coast for Chicago, where she would spend most of the rest of her life working as a nanny. In her leisure time, Maier took photographs in the streets. Continuing her craft into the late 1990′s, she left behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives.
Through her unique style of candid street photography, Maier incidentally recorded some of the most interesting marvels and peculiarities of urban America in the second half of the twentieth century.
Vivian Maier’s massive body of work came to light in 2007 when her work was discovered at a local thrift auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side. From there, it would eventually impact the world over and change the life of the man who championed her work and brought it to the public eye, John Maloof.
Currently the work is being archived and cataloged for the enjoyment of others and for future generations. John Maloof is at the core of this project after reconstructing most of the archive which had been dispersed to the various buyers attending that auction. Now, with roughly 90% of the archive reconstructed, Vivian Maier’s work is part of a renaissance in interest in the art of street photography.
Be sure to check out the Entente Cordiale exhibition which is literally across the street in the entrance to St Pancras International.

International Awards
The first ever London Street Photography Festival International Awards received over 1,600 entries from all over the world. The standard of work was outstanding and this exhibition reveal the first and second prize winners and eleven shortlisted finalists, exhibited alongsde the festival's prestigious headline show: Vivian Maier.
Judges deliberated long and hard to choose the overall winners:
"It was great to see so many entries to the competition and so many images of a high standard. It is good to know that street photography today is appreciated and practised by so many people."
Mike Seabourne, Museum of London
"Part of what made the judging process so difficult was the sheer variety of approaches to 'street photography' represented in the submissions. In reality, street photography is an over-arching term which encompasses several sub-genres or ways of working, including documentary, conceptual, typological, atmospheric and experimental photography. It's these many facets that make street photography so enduring as a subject and endlessly exciting to explore. Viewing pictures from so many countries was a thrill. We could have easily selected twenty photographers whose work stood out and provoked strong opinions and enthusiastic discussion amongst the panel."
Tiffany Jones, photographer and editor of fLIP magazine
