London Street Photography Festival
Different venues, London
The London Street Photography Festival will see world-class photography take over London's most celebrated venues, large and small, for the festival's inaugural year. Highlights include the first UK exhibition of the incredible archives of mysterious Chicago street photographer Vivian Maier at the German Gymnasium, as well as a newly discovered body of work by previously unknown British Photographer Walter Joseph - a gritty portrait of post-war London at the British Library.
Street photography is a tradition nearly as old as photography itself. As soon as cameras and processing techniques became portable and practical enough to leave the confines of the studio (around the 1870's) photographers began documenting the world around them. In particular they photographed urban areas where life moved quickly and the urge to record and document change and progress was instinctive.
The style has been made famous by some of the best known photographers of our time including Eugène Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand and Martin Parr although it has not always achieved the recognition it deserves.
Early photographers made street photographs for their personal interest, but it was with studio portraits or artistic landscapes that they paid the bills or acheived artistic recognition. Fifty years ago a street photographer was a street-vendor who took your picture at a tourist attraction then charged you for a print or Polaroid copy. Today, a common misconception is that street photography is somehow related to street art (graffiti etc.) or street style images.

The Festival
The London Street Photography Festival will see world-class photography take over London's most celebrated venues, large and small, for the festival's inaugural year. Launched this summer to celebrate the time-honoured genre of street photography, the festival showcases curated exhibitions, events and workshops, bringing together leading international artists past and present.
Highlights include the first UK exhibition of the incredible archives of mysterious Chicago street photographer Vivian Maier at the German Gymnasium, as well as a newly discovered body of work by previously unknown British Photographer Walter Joseph - a gritty portrait of post-war London at the British Library.
The London Street Photography Festival is an exciting new event in London’s cultural calendar which will champion the best contemporary street photographers, honor past masters and provide a space for discussion, debate and appreciation of the current relevance of this time-honored genre.
The festival takes place throughout July with a diverse programme of exhibitions, events, talks, walks and workshops. In this first year, exhibitions will be curated by the festival team and partners rather than through submissions. However, we invited street photographers from around the world to enter the first Street Photography Awards which included a Student Award (open to UK-based students) and an International Award (open to photographers from all over the world). Selected entries from the Awards will be exhibited during the festival.

The majority of activities will take place in and around King’s Cross, which has a rich heritage as an industrial hub of London. New developments and regeneration are now transforming it into a creative and cultural focal point, with media and arts organisations such as The Guardian and Central St Martins School of Art relocating to the area.
Exhibitions and events will take place at the German Gymnasium, British Library, National Portrait Gallery, V&A and St Pancras International. Satellite exhibitions and events will take place across London.
