comunicato stampa

The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center kicks off our summer season with the opening of two concurrent exhibitions on Friday, July 15, 2011. Inside & Out and Material Deposits feature emerging and established artists whose works explore ideas about the physical world as well as politics and popular culture.

Inside & Out is an exhibition that brings together sculptures by Melvin Edwards and works on paper by Peter Saul, two celebrated artists, both in their mid-seventies, whose works have never been paired together. Each artist is known for their unique expressions of humor, anxiety and rage, and both make reference to the everyday world and socio-political realities. Edwards uses welded metal (chains, industrial bolts and tools) to create his compressed wall sculptures that reference African-American experiences with violence and struggle; Saul has developed a cartoon world of exaggerated public figures (such as Bernie Madoff), food and bodily fluids.

Inside & Out was developed in association with the National Black Arts Festival. Special thanks to David Nolan Gallery and Alexander Gray Associates in New York City for their generous support.

Material Deposits is a group exhibition focused on notions of materiality, accumulation and mapping. It features four recipients of the 2009 Artadia Award in San Francisco (Moses Nornberg, Brion Nuda Rosch, Leslie Shows, Weston Teruya) alongside artists from Atlanta (Seana Reilly), Los Angeles (Elonda Billera) and New York (David Shaw). Working in a variety of media, the artists share affinities in the exploration of the real and the represented. Nature is understood as a shifting landscape of roots and minerals as well as architectural constructions depicting real estate and urban detritus. Bread, jam and stereo equipment are some of the objects used to examine desire and transformation.

Material Deposits was developed in partnership with the Artadia Exhibitions Exchange program in an effort to present works by the recipients of Artadia Awards at arts venues around the United States. This is the second exhibition at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center to feature 2009 grantees from San Francisco. Embodying (January 7 – March 20, 2011) included artists James Gobel, Allison Smith and Richard T. Walker. These exhibitions are supported through Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue with lead support by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
