From the Redwood Forests... is the culmination of Omaha artist's recent experiments in the transformative power of nature. The variety of mediums in which Peterson works - drawing, photography and ceramics - will all serve to document the river voyages.
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts is proud to announce From the Redwood Forests…the culmination of Omaha artist Kjell Peterson’s recent experiments in the transformative power of nature. The exhibition kicks off with an Opening Reception on Friday, July 15th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, followed by a Gallery Talk on Saturday, July 16th at 12 noon. Both events are free and open to the public and will take place at the bemisUNDERGROUND, 12th & Leavenworth.
For the past several weeks, Peterson has been taking his handcrafted canoe, Vasudeva, on excursions down the waters of the Calamus, Platte and Elkhorn Rivers. His original plan, to document a journey on the Missouri River from Omaha to New Orleans, was reconsidered after floodwaters made the river too dangerous to navigate.
But the change in plan only served to reinforce Peterson’s thesis – that despite our best efforts, human concepts of identity and place cannot exist independently of the natural environment. This is among a series of experiences the artist plans to share in From the Redwood Forests… a bemisUNDERGROUND exhibition examining human interconnectedness via the landscape.
The variety of mediums in which Peterson works — drawing, photography and ceramics – will all serve to document the river voyages. But more than any painting or sculpture, the spirit of the project is perhaps best represented by the exhibition’s centerpiece — the canoe itself.
Originally from Olympia, Washington, Peterson currently lives and works in Omaha, Nebraska. From the Redwood Forests…is curated by Joel Damon, bemisUNDERGROUND curator.
The bemisUNDERGROUND is an integral part of the arts community in Omaha. The space provides regional artists exhibition opportunities and is dedicated to ongoing dialogues about contemporary art.
