Private Stash is a look at the varied influences that have helped shape jazz musician Fred Hersch’s life and work to date. The exhibition is a highly personal immersion into the music, artwork, and life experiences that have come together to inspire his varied oeuvre. Visitors will gain insight into Hersch’s artistic process by looking at the diverse influences—including ev- erything from folk art and photography, to the music of artists as wide-ranging as Thelonious Monk and Joni Mitchell—that shape his compositions. The exhibition will present these items side by side with musical sketches and final music for stage productions, allowing for visitors to see—and hear—the evolution from inspiration to completion.

The objects include pieces from Hersch’s collection of whimsical folk art as well as fine art made by colleagues from his numerous residencies at the MacDowell Colony. Music on paper will include his original “scribble” sketches through various stages to the final pencil versions. iPods will allow visitors to hear Hersch’s compositions along with selections of music that has inspired him in significant ways. A number of compositions will be presented in this side-by-side see/hear fashion including pieces from his new multimedia work My Coma Dreams, which will be shown on a video loop.

Weekly mid-day mini concerts will be presented by students and friends that have been influ- enced by Mr. Hersch. Schedule to be announced at http://apexart.org/exhibitions/hersch.php.

About Fred Hersch: The New York Times recently called Fred Hersch “a pianist, composer and conceptualist of rare imaginative power.” He has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition and three Grammy award nominations. A 24-year-old jazz pianist and composer originally from Southern California, Jeremy Siskind recently took second prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition. His recent CD, Simple Songs (for When the World Seems Strange), earned four stars from Downbeat Magazine and was placed on three critics' "top CDs of the year." Having recently completed a Master's in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, Siskind currently resides in New York where he studies piano with Fred Hersch and Sophia Rosoff.

New York-based pianist/composer Vadim Neselovskyi has won praise from The Los Angeles Times ("extraordinary playing") and The New York Times ("feathery touch") and is also known as one of the key members of the Grammy winning Gary Burton Quintet. A native of Odessa and a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Neselovskyi is rapidly gaining a reputation as a bandleader, creating what jazzreview.com called a "thrilling blend of classical and jazz."

Dan Tepfer is a New York-based pianist and composer and one of the most formidable jazz musicians on the international stage. By age 28, he has performed the world over in contexts ranging from solo piano to full orchestra, chronicling his talents on the solo disc Twelve Improvisations in Twelve Keys (2009) as well as the trio sessions Before the Storm (2005), Oxygen (2007) and Five Pedals Deep, his 2010 Sunnyside release. Dan has also had the extraordinary privilege of an ongoing duo partnership with alto saxophonist and jazz luminary Lee Konitz, documented on the acclaimed 2009 Sunnyside CD Duos With Lee.

Adam Birnbaum is quickly emerging as one of the top young voices in jazz piano. After receiving an Artist's Diploma from Juilliard as a member of the inaugural class in Jazz Studies in 2003, Adam went on to win the American Jazz Piano Competition in May 2004 to become the American Pianists Association's Cole Porter fellow in Jazz. Since then Adam has performed extensively throughout the world in top jazz festivals, recital halls and jazz clubs, as a soloist, sideman, and as a leader. He regularly performs with his own trio as well as with Greg Osby's group and with the Al Foster Quartet.

October 15
Pianist and composer Gregg Kallor's most recent Carnegie Hall concert, in April 2011, featured the world premiere of his nine-movement suite for solo piano, "A Single Noon" – a tableau of New York life told through composed music and improvisation. The suite will be featured on Kallor's upcoming solo album.
