comunicato stampa

Ondřej Ševčík (1976, Most) studied conceptual and intermedia art at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under Prof. AdélaMatasová and Prof. Jiří David. In 2002 he spent a year at HochschullefürGrafik und Buchkunstin Leipzig, Germany, in the studio of artistic photography run by Prof. TimmRautert, and at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf in the studio of sculpture under Prof. MagdalenaJetelová. He completed his studies in 2005.

In his work he combines video, photography and three-dimensional objects and usually unites them in larger unites that thematically address the environment of architecture, urban planning, and ecology. He lives and works in Prague and Liberec.

Most is a mining town in North Bohemia located in middle of a large brown-coal basin. In order to get at the large deposits of high-grade brown coal located just 30 metres beneath the ground surface in the 1960s the town of Most was demolished and relocated several hundred metres away from its original site.

The black building blocks of a puzzle that takes up the entire floor space of the gallery are a reminder of Most from the normalisation era, when thanks to new construction and high incomes from coal mining and heavy industry Most became the showcase display town of socialism. This changed radically after 1989. The fragments of text are taken from a publication issued in the 1970s by the town committee in Most mapping the history of coal mining, the post-war expulsion of the Germans and the demolition of the old and construction of the new town.
