The Eye of the Tiger exhibit, at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, displays artist Alberto Della Valle's unique approach to the task of illustrating the celebrated novels of the distinguished children's adventure novelist, Emilio Salgari. Much like the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, Salgari sought to bring his faraway lands into the homes of his readers through the written word, while Della Valle, accompanying him, provided the illustrations. Della Valle also revealed a talent for acting and directing by taking Salgari's stories and interpreting them in scenes staged in his own home. The Neapolitan artist enlisted the assistance of friends and acquaintances to act out the drama of Salgari's stories that include scenes of jungles, the Far East, ships, and warfare using ordinary household items as props. The exhibit consists of several photographed reenactments and their corresponding illustrations, which were completed between 1904 and 1920 and that show an originality that was ahead of its time.
