The Long March Project

The Long March is a revolution. In its theoretically articulated curatorial praxis, space, place and memory connect, leading artists and organizers through a series of display events which have been (and will be) physically realized along the route of the historic Red Army trek in the nation now known as the People's Republic of China. But this journey is about more than one country, one history, one nationally articulated group of contempo! rary artists. In taking art to the Chinese periphery, the Long March hopes to spark a global discourse on visual culture, display practice, and revolutionary memory. In involving many of the most prominent artists and critics in China today, the Long March seeks to add another layer of complexity to an art system in flux. In defying the spatial and temporal conventions of the biennial/triennial system, the Long March looks to provide a more open-ended and transparent model for curators around the world.

In this presentation, the chair of the Long March Foundation and chief curator Lu Jie, will share archival materials from the first twelve of the Long March's planned 20 sites, showing images of the most outstanding works realized on-site in line with the Long March's unique curatorial methodology. By offering these works for scrutiny, the organizers (including Lilly Wei) and participants of the Long March hope to open a discussion about the project, its progress to dat! e, and its potential.
