Considering the Aesthetic of American Safety. The 7-person show Homeland Security was gathered to speak to issues of willful ignorance, escapism, and a lack of reality concerning evil, justice and carnage in an age of imperialistic 'humanitarian' warfare. The artists have formed a whimsical regurgitation of American culture's continued exploitation of brutality and security.
Considering the Aesthetic of American Safety
'-Hmm. Let me see...First impressions: oiled musclemen with machine guns...cut to
pastel bears, valentine hearts, juxtaposition of wish fulfillment violence and
infantile imagery, desire to regress, to be free from responsibility...This all
says war. We should buy accordingly.
-But sir we have never bought munitions...
-Of course not. You're ignoring the subtext: increased sexual imagery, even in
candy ads. It implies an erotic undercurrent not uncommon in times of war.
Remember the baby boom...?'

The 7-person show Homeland Security was
gathered to speak to issues of willful ignorance, escapism, and a lack of
reality concerning evil, justice and carnage in an age of imperialistic
'humanitarian' warfare. The artists have formed a whimsical regurgitation of
American culture's continued exploitation of brutality and security. The show
utilizes comic book mythologies, adolescent fantasies of violence, erotic
children's toys, 80's teen movies, cartoon abstractions, portraiture and
non-objective formalism in combinations of sculpture, painting, and
performance to this effect.
The opening reception is January 16th from 6-9pm with performances by Jeff
Williams and Aaron Zimmerman. Other performance times and dates will be posted
on the website with the show's conclusion January 31st.
