A Whitney for the Whitney at Philip Morris

From January 23, 2003 to April 4, 2003, the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris will present Ellen Harvey: A Whitney for the Whitney at Philip Morris. This new installation features 394 scaled replica paintings by Ellen Harvey of works from the Whitney's Permanent Collection. In addition, seven recent Whitney contemporary acquisitions will be shown. These works are by Jim Campbell, Luis Gispert, Robert Lazzarini, Paul McCarthy, Paul Pfeiffer, Hirsch Perlman, and Jim Shaw. This exhibition has been organized by Shamim M. Momin, Branch Director and Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris.

Known primarily as a painter, Harvey creates works that reflect on historical notions of what constitutes art, ranging from painting genres to 'acceptable' art experiences. Here acting simultaneously as artist and curator, Harvey incorporates works she has chosen from the Whitney's contemporary collection into her site-specific installation to produce a dialogue about institutional presentation and identity.

Harvey constructs an internal viewing space within the gallery comprised of panels on which she has painted 394 scaled copies of works featured in American Visionaries: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, a recently published handbook documenting the Whitney's permanent collection. Rectangular openings in the panels allow viewers to examine selections from recent Whitney contemporary acquisitions at a determined vantage point and distance. These spatial conditions further address both issues of physical access and visual representation of art in an institutional context.

Born in Kent, England, Ellen Harvey received her A.B. from Harvard College and J.D. from Yale Law School. She is also a graduate of the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. Harvey currently lives in New York City and has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions including De Chiara Gallery, NY, NY; Marella Arte Contemporanea, Milan, Italy; Stefan Stux Gallery, NY, NY; and Wohlfarth Gallery, Washington DC. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions in such venues as Queens Museum of Art, Queens, NY; Artists Space, NY, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Kwangju Biennale 2000, Kwangju, Korea; Pierogi 2000, Brooklyn, NY.

Contemporary Artists on Contemporary Art is an ongoing series of exhibitions that invites emerging contemporary artists to select work from the Whitney contemporary collection and to create new work to be shown alongside their choices. Based on the Permanent Collection of the Whitney Museum, these annual exhibitions are intended to provide context for contemporary art and to present an exciting visual dialogue on what 'contemporary' can mean.

Ellen Harvey: A Whitney for the Whitney at Philip Morris is accompanied by a free brochure with an essay by Shamim M. Momin. A free artist talk with Ellen Harvey will take place on Tuesday, March 4th at 6:30 pm. Free gallery talks are offered every Wednesday and Friday at 1:00 p.m.
