Organized by SITE Santa Fe

Organized by the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, New York

This exhibition is the first major museum exhibition in the United States of work by the acclaimed Venezuelan artist José Antonio Hernández-Diez. One of the most important Latin American artists of the last decade, Hernández-Diez creates candid, poetic, and, at times, disturbing and irreverent multimedia installations inspired by the vernacular culture and traditions of his home country. Hernández-Diez is part of a new generation of Venezuelan artists who, in the late 1980s, began creating multimedia installations that challenged the aesthetic traditions that had dominated Venezuelan art since the early 1950s. The emergence of this generation of artists occurred at nearly the same time that Venezuelans began a public process of searching for the solution to the economic and social crisis in their country. Hernández-Diez's work is as engaged in the particular context of local culture as it is in the language of international post-modernism.

This exhibition includes eight large-scale installations created between 1991 and 2000.

The first scholarly catalogue on Hernández-Diez will accompany the exhibition and will include essays by Dan Cameron and Gerardo Mosquera, independent art writer, editor, critic, and leading authority on contemporary Latin American art.

Nic Nicosia

Organized by SITE Santa Fe

This exhibition of Nic Nicosia's work will include 10 large-scale photographs and a video projection, as well as a new film commissioned by SITE Santa Fe. Nicosia's work is concerned with the information that is received from a photograph, and he shoots his pieces with that in mind. By combining miniature sets with life-size objects, Nicosia creates disorienting, fanciful imagery. His new film, entitled SaFe at 360°, turns the camera on the Southwestern landscapes that motivated Nicosia to make numerous road trips. While creating the film, Nicosia photographed panoramic highway views between Dallas and Santa Fe, Taos and Santa Fe, and Albuquerque and Santa Fe. He then created miniature sets of the landscapes, and rephotographed the sets. The film will be accompanied by a soundtrack produced by the artist.
