Zenita Komad
Spirituality is not Shopping

The Austrian artist Zenita Komad has been working on the subject of spirituality for many years. This always centers on the link between cultural-historical contexts and the individual‘s own existential-personal attitude.

She has left a lot of possibilities for interpretation open in the title of her exhibition at the Museum Judenplatz: “Spirituality is not shopping” originates from one of her drawings. At the same time, Zenita Komad refers to cultural-historical motifs with a greater meaning, using numbers, words and pictures. For example, the number 64 consists of eight times the number eight, which when depicted as an Arabic number in a lying position is also the symbol for infinity and plays a role in many religious and spiritual contexts.

A film by Rebekka Hagg for the exhibition is made up of 64 portraits of eight men and eight women, each of whom says a line of a poetic text. 121 drawings that Zenita Komad generally sees as pictorial – and sometimes also as literal/– records of thought processes are exhibited at the museum. Zenita Komad once again game used systematics in an installation in the main exhibition room – as she did before for Schachoper 2005 at the Kunsthalle wien or “When Heaven Kisses Earth” in 2008. She developed a game for several participants with the assistance of Rebekka Hagg, Thomas Amann and Markus Mittringer.
