Rolex Arts Weekend

LIVE from the NYPL presents the
Rolex Arts Weekend

November 10–13, an international group of artists including Anish Kapoor, Brian Eno, Peter Sellars, Jessye Norman, José Van Dam, Osvaldo Golijov, Gilberto Gil, and, Danny Glover will gather at the New York Public Library for the arts festival LIVE from the NYPL Presents the Rolex Arts Weekend. Co-presented by Rolex and LIVE from the NYPL, the weekend will feature public discussions with these artists, as well as performances and talks by choreographer Lee Serle, filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, poet Tracy K. Smith, composer Ben Frost, theatre artist Maya Zbib, and visual artist Nicholas Hlobo. These six emerging talents were paired with master artists—Trisha Brown, Zhang Yimou, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Brian Eno, Peter Sellars, and Anish Kapoor, respectively—for a year of creative exchange by the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

A full list of events follows below. Tickets for all events are 25 USD for the general public and 15 USD for students/seniors/Friends of the NYPL, and may be purchased at www.rolexartsweekend.com. Proceeds from LIVE from the NYPL presents the Rolex Arts Weekend will benefit the New York Public Library.

Thursday, November 10
GILBERTO GIL in conversation with Paul Holdengräber

The legendary Brazilian musician discusses his performing life with Paul Holdengräber. Co-presented with Linguamon—Casa de les Llengues.

Friday, November 11
JESSYE NORMAN in conversation with Paul Holdengräber

A one-on-one discussion with soprano Jessye Norman.

Saturday, November 12
ANNEMARIE JACIR, DANNY GLOVER, and PETER SCARLET in conversation

Protégée in Film Annemarie Jacir speaks with a panel of film industry luminaries who have influenced her work and career, including Danny Glover, who is producing her current film, and Peter Scarlet, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.

TRACY K. SMITH and HANS MAGNUS ENZENSBERGER: Poems Set to Music

Protégée in Literature Tracy K. Smith has commissioned composer Gregory Spears to set to music two poems, her own Savior Machine and The Feast of Flowers by her mentor Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Smith and Enzensberger will introduce the performance and discuss their work.

JOSÉ VAN DAM and OSVALDO GOLIJOV in conversation with Paul Holdengräber

The Belgian opera star José Van Dam and the award-winning Argentine classical composer Osvaldo Golijov join Paul Holdengräber for a wide ranging discussion.

Sunday, November 13
BRIAN ENO, ANISH KAPOOR, and PETER SELLARS in conversation with Paul Holdengräber

Paul Holdengräber convenes three acclaimed artists—composer Brian Eno, visual artist Anish Kapoor, and theatre/opera director Peter Sellars—for a discussion of their work.

MAYA ZBIB: The Music Box (U.S. premiere), introduced by PETER SELLARS
3:30pm
The Music Box, a one-woman show created by Protégée in Theatre Maya Zbib, is a performance about women's personal connections to their homes. Zbib's mentor Peter Sellars will introduce the work.

NICHOLAS HLOBO'S Counting Figure
On display in the McGraw Rotunda
Protégé in Visual Art Nicholas Hlobo's sculpture Counting Figure, from the installation Ndizi seen at the Liverpool Biennial, will be displayed in the McGraw Rotunda. The work can also be seen during the Friday and Saturday programs in the Celeste Bartos Forum.

BEN FROST'S Music For 6 Guitars (U.S. Premiere), in the presence of Mentors Trisha Brown and Brian Eno

The culmination of the Arts Weekend features the work of Protégé in Dance Lee Serle and Protégé in Music Ben Frost, performing in two of the grandest spaces in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.
