In addition to almost 1000 artists, several independent groups and initiatives will exhibit the works of hundreds of young artists in their respective exhibitions. The program includes The 60 Years of Professor Yurdaer Altintas, paintings by turkish artists, Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Pera Museum's From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul Photography Exhibition, Image of Italy, Bergamo art Fair exhibition, Independent Groups and Art Initiatives from Turkey.
The 21st International Istanbul Art Fair/ARTIST 2011 will be held by TÜYAP Fair and Exhibition Organization, Inc. between November 12 and 20, 2011, at the TÜYAP Fair and Convention Center, Büyükçekmece.
Honor Awards Given
Honor Awards of the Istanbul Art Fair are given every year to commemorate outstanding contributions to various branches of plastic arts. This year’s Artist of Honor Award will be given to Professor Yurdaer Altıntaş for his significant contribution to graphic art in Turkey, while the Critic of Honor Award will be given to Professor Uşun Tükel, the Benefactor of Art Award to the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum and the Collector of Honor Award to Professor Münir Ekonomi.
The 60 Years of Professor Yurdaer Altıntaş
60 years of work by Yurdaer Altıntaş, the Artist of Honor of the 21st International Art Fair, will be presented in a retrospective exhibition throughout the fair.
The exhibition includes banners, posters, corporate image designs, illustrations, book and magazine covers, snapshots of his artistic life, videos and printed works. The exhibition displays originals and sketches side by side for comparison.
Art in Archeology from the Professor Münir Ekonomi Collection
In addition to his work in constitutional and trade law and patronage to various institutions, Professor Münir Ekonomi views art and archeology as areas of social responsibility.
Part of the Professor Münir Ekonomni Collection –the fruit of his extraordinary knowledge in all branches of art from music to literature, ceramics and painting– will be exhibited at the Istanbul Art Fair.
The first section of the exhibition will include 150 archeological artifacts displayed with special permission. These artifacts are protected under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism and the Museum of Archeology of Istanbul. The Art in Archeology exhibition will provide a summary of the knowledge carried to the present day by the artifacts of cultural heritage preserved in the Professor Münir Ekonomi Collection.
The exhibits span a long period of time from the Copper Age to the Byzantine Era. The exhibition is divided into categories of Art and Daily Life, Art and Faith, Art and War, and Art and Burial Rituals.
The second section of the exhibition includes paintings of prominent artists of Turkey such as Fikret Mualla, Mehmet Nejat Devrim, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu and Mehmet Güleryüz.
Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum’s From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul Photography Exhibition
This exhibition includes photographs of the European coast of the Bosphorus from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century kept in the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Collection.
Taken by the leading photographers of late 19th and early 20th century Istanbul, the photographs are part of the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, and provide a glimpse of the stunning structures, daily life and outstanding personalities of the era.
Photographers James Robertson, Félice Beato, Pascal Sébah, Polycarpe Joaillier, Abdullah Brothers, Guillame Berggren, Bogos Tarkulyan, Mihran İranyan and Gülmez Brothers and their meticulous, demanding work not only bear witness to the appearance of the city at the time, they take the viewer on a voyage from Karaköy to Rumelifeneri, where they can witness the slow but fundamental change in the city’s skyline, architecture, vehicles, bridges, ports, streets and squares.
Important Exhibitions from Italy
The joint “Image of Italy” exhibition of 100 artists from all around Italy will be available for viewing during the fair.
An exhibition by the Bergamo Art Fair brings together select works of 10 artists from Italy.
An Abundance of Exhibitions
The 21st Istanbul Art Fair will host a great number of exhibitions by important artists. In addition to almost 1000 artists, several independent groups and initiatives will exhibit the works of hundreds of young artists in their respective exhibitions. The Art Fair will occupy three halls this year and have a total exhibition space of 15,000 square meters.
Independent Groups and Art Initiatives from Turkey
As one of the key partners of the Istanbul Art Fair, independent groups and art initiatives will represent an alternative perspective with noteworthy exhibitions and works in a variety of modern art disciplines.
Art in Discussion
Interviews and panel discussions during the 21st International Istanbul Art Fair will host artists, academics, critics, experts and institution representatives. The discussions will be centered on the main theme of “Breaking Icons; Art and Media.”
Change in Visiting Hours
The weekday visiting hours of the 21st International Istanbul Art Fair are 10 am to 7 pm, while weekend visiting hours have not changed: 11 am to 8 pm. The Art Fair will close at 7 pm on Sunday, November 20, 2011.
The 21st International Istanbul Art Fair will be held concurrently with the 30th International Istanbul Book Fair.
