The Quadrilateral Biennial

Out of Left Field: the title of the exhibition invokes a foreign US English idiom, that stems from baseball and means suddenly, from an unexpected source or direction. In the same manner, the curatorial concept for this Biennial seeks to evoke this element of surprise but also to allude to political and ideological spheres. Artists represented are guided to mimic the strategy of non-alignment, where, starting from strongest individuality, a possibility of coexistence is established.

The Quadrilateral Biennial was initiated in 2005 focusing on contemporary
art practices in the neighboring region of Croatia, Italy, Hungary and
Slovenia. First BQ considered relativism, the second crisis of cultural
heroes, and the third angles and intersection of media art. In its 4th
edition, the Biennial embraced the challenge of exploring the open-ending
and nomadic character of contemporary art, beyond regional and national
boundaries, thus reviewing its regional focus in the broader, multilateral
framework.

of coexistence is established. Artists co-present works in all media in
powerful dialogue with performance art. Starting from examinations of body
and identity, subjectivity and objectivity, the artists follow discursive
practice of rigorous questioning of both the ideological apparatus and the
self.
