Tokyo Wonder Site Berlin is pleased to announce the group show curated by Taro
Chiezo(*1962) for the first exhibition of our new space.
The exhibition is entitled Crisis and Modern Art Manner which is included four
artists who have strong relationships to Tokyo: Taro Chiezo, Jårg Geismar, Kengo
Kito and Mamoru Tsukada.
Taro Chiezo curated this exhibition from his experience of Tohoku earthquake and all
after effects of the crisis. Fortunately, he was more than 300km away from the
earthquake site but this experience gave him an opportunity to think about our
civilisation in conceptualized. Chiezo said “When a crisis of our modern
civilisation, I rediscover Power of Art. Especially on mid 20 century Modern Art.”
Chiezo continued “I had experienced 911 New York 10 years ago, then, I experienced
Tohoku 311 this year. First, it is difficult to concentrate on Art, but few days
passing by, I strongly feel strength of Art.”
This exhibition contained a big cellophane installation work by Jårg Geismar,
computer generated prints by Mamoru Tsukada, two large sculptures by Kengo Kito, and
a large format painting and a series of drawings by Taro Chiezo. All the works use
a materiality of image and represent possibility of Modern Art in a context that, an
art work is a tool to access our civilisation’s archives. For example, many layered
pleats of Geismar’s work shows a transparency of our civilisation’s archive quality.
This quality is also finding on floating images by Tsukada. Kito’s weight less
Brancusinian sculpture and Chiezo’s Abstract Expressionistic painting which is after
Beuys’s drawing, are represent a quality of an existence of 21st century man.
