OSS 117: Lost in Rio

6 January 2012 - 12 January 2012

France's top secret agent returns! It is 1967 and Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath (Jean Dujardin) - aka OSS 117 - jets off to Rio de Janeiro to track down a microfilm containing a list of countrymen who collaborated during the Occupation. He is soon up against the CIA, Nazis, the Israeli secret service, Chinese gangsters and even Mexican wrestlers. A delirously entertaining spy-thriller parody, from the director of The Artist.

Dir Michel Hazanavicius, France, 2009, English subtitles, 101 mins, Cert 15

Cast: Jean Dujardin , Louise Monot , Rüdiger Vogler

Fitzcarraldo

Showing here in a brand new restoration, like its companion piece Aguirre: The Wrath of God, this epic is one of the great visions of cinema. It also seems to be one of cinemas greatest follies, as those who have read Conquest of the Useless, Herzog’s own diary about its making, will surmise. A true story of an Irish opera-loving madman, determined to build an opera house deep in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, drags a 300-tonne boat overland, yes overland, up a mountain(!) through some of the densest, least hospitable, jungle on earth. Clearly this is the act of a madman. Herzog decided, and thank heavens he did, to explore this madness, by... doing it himself while upping the ante somewhat and turning the whole thing into one of the greatest films ever made.

Dir. Werner Herzog, 1982, German with English subs, cert PG, 158 mins

Cast: Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy, Miguel Ángel Fuentes, Paul Hittscher

LSFF: Funny Shit

This popular kick-off to LSFF is a selection of new films to put a smile on your face for the New Year. Watch out for Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham in Pitch Black Heist, a film in which a bank robbery takes a bizarre turn. And Josie Long and Kevin Eldon as voice animated little people in All Consuming Love [Man in a Cat].

Films in this programme are eligable for the LoCo Award for Best Comedy Short

OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies

A French special agent saunters off to Cairo with orders to "make the Middle East safe" and sets about offending women, Muslims and anyone else who isn't an unreconstructed French 1950s male. Owing more to the Zucker and Marx Brothers than to Austin Powers or even James Bond, this suave French character, actually first created in 1949, takes us through a couple of hours of perfectly judged satire and belly laughs. From the director of The Artist, this surprise hit established Hazanavicius’ international reputation.

Dir Michel Hazanavicius, France 2006, 99 minutes, subtitles, Cert 12A

Cast: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, Aure Atik
