Minor Threat, 1983 & Performance and Stage-Set Utilizing Two-Way Mirror and Video Time Delay (collaboration with Glenn Branca), 1983. Dan Graham likes architecture, popular music and astrology, among other things. This Sunday evening at Signal he will present two works both from 1983, the year of the pig according to the Chinese calender. In Minor Threat (38:18 min, color, sound) Graham documents the hardcore band from Washington D.C. in a performance at CBGB in New York. The function of both popular and underground music in contemporary culture, which has long been a point of inquiry for Graham, is here examined through the lense of 1980s hardcore subculture and in particular Minor Threat and its audience. Performance and Stage-Set Utilizing Two-Way Mirror and Video Time Delay (45:45 min, b&w, sound) is an installation/ performance work, produced and performed by Graham and musician Glenn Branca for Graham's 1983 retrospective exhibition Pavilions at the Kunsthalle in Berne, Switzerland. The audience was seated on the right and the musicians on the left, both facing and observing each other through a large two-way mirror. A video screen seen through the two-way mirror showed a six-second time-delayed view of the room restructuring both gaze and perception. The evening will be held in English.
