Esther Schipper is pleased to present the first solo exhibition with new works by Christopher Roth.
Initiated by an encounter with the psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek, Roth embarked upon a search for himself. The exhibition Roth shows the results of his quest. Besides these findings from the life of Christopher Roth, the exhibition will include a horror film, a video documentary, objects, sculptures and a personalized dedication inscribed on a red wall.

In 1982, Christopher Roth published the novel 200D, which this year, 30 years on, has been re- published. His film Baader (2002), which he directed, produced and for which he wrote the screenplay, was awarded the Alfred-Bauer-Prize on the Berlinale in 2002. Since the 1990s he worked together with Franz von Stauffenberg and in 2000 they became the artist-duo RothStauffenberg under which name they exhibited extensively, including on the biennials in Venice and Sao Paolo.

In 2010, he published a collection of books titled 80*81, together with Georg Diez, which deals with the shift that occurred in German society at the beginning oft the 1980s. Together with Diez he also gave numerous performances in theatres. In 2011 they performed the 8-hour opera The 80*81 findings, 2081 in the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Christopher Roth (born in Munich) lives and works in Berlin.

On 24 March 2012, the Kunst-Werke Berlin will host a congress initiated by Christopher Roth & Georg Diez dedicated to the topic What Happened 2081? An artist-organized walk from the Kunst-Werke to the Berlin Olympic Stadium will take place on 25 March.
