The Dubrow International will include work in a variety of media by 32 artists who are citizens of foreign nations. The nations represented by artists in this show may be as close to us as Canada or Mexico, or as far away as Kenya and Japan. The exhibition will be held at two locations: Roger Smith Gallery and Kravets/Wehby Gallery.

The Dubrow International will include work in a variety of media by 32
artists who are citizens of foreign nations. The nations represented by
artists in this show may be as close to us as Canada or Mexico, or as
far away as Kenya and Japan. Norman Dubrow thinks that these are some
of the most interesting artists to have emerged in the 1990s, and he
collects work by all of them. Nothing from his collection is in this
show.
'I almost always interview the artists about the works of theirs
that I add to my collection. I learned from Mexican painter Arturo
Elizondo that his images derive from historic Mexican photographs,
prints and paintings. In discussing his work, the other painters that
German artist Michel Majerus referred to the most were the Americans de
Kooning, Warhol, and Stella. In their subject matter, the series of
photographs by Japanese photographer Shigeyoshi Ohi could not be more
American - lighthouses on our Northeast coastline. However, 'Portsmouth
Harbor Light, N.H.' in this show is composed like a traditional Zen
landscape painting, with the lighthouse taking the place of the tall
mountain in the far distance in those paintings.'
'On the checklist, I
have indicated the citizenship of each artist. One of the most
interesting ways to look at the pieces in this show is from the point of
view of how much derives from the art and culture of the artist's own
nation, how much is due to American influences, and how much comes from
the other cultures, past or present, that the artist may have studied.
However, each piece is in this show because I think that it is
beautiful, and would be a pleasure to live with.'
