Pneumatic object
Mariusz Waras aka M-city
galeria Awangarda, BWA Wrocław

Mariusz Waras is the best-known Polish artist working in the city space, author of a few hundred murals created within the framework of the M-city project. His works may be seen in such urban agglomerations around the globe as Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, London, Prague, Paris, Budapest and Warsaw. This time, the individual exhibition presents the artist’s new concepts. He departs from the characteristic idea of covering the urban substance with stenciled elements on the walls, and he builds a site-specific, gigantic 3D pneumatic installation instead. Waras creates large, monochromatic inflatable objects, symbolizing ideas connected with the concepts of the factory (workplace), home, church – to be randomly rearranged in various configurations or structures. He builds his m-city in scale and in space. This harmonious and conceptually homogeneous project will be juxtaposed with the works by Thomas Schostok, presented as part of the exhibition entitled “Hail to the King, Baby!”.

Curator: Beata Bartecka

Born in 1972, started his career as a salesman for bathroom tiles. In 1999 he founded and represented himself as ‘{ths}’, working in his own studio as a designer/artist for international and national clients. He never studies design because he always thought, to study design is to be brainwashed.

{ths} released monographs/books: “Hard Blow” (Rojo Editions, 2008) and “Mr. Trash” (self published), volume one of his art and design works during the last 10 years of his career. He also creates so called “Gluebooks”, unique hand-made “sketchbooks”.

His love for typography can always admired in his art and design work. In 2002 he cofounded with Stefan Claudius The Cape Arcona Type Foundry, a type foundry that produces and distributes digital typefaces.

{ths} is without anger or hate, because it’s fondness for Elvis Presley and Barry White records, that continuous playing during working, make him nice and merry.

{ths} defines is work as ‘trash urban warfare porn dirt style pop’.

Breakin’ the Wall
Exhibition of mural
Wrocław city space

This is the fourth stage of the project. The artists invited to participate in “Breakin’ the Wall” are prominent representatives world urban art: Mudwig (Bristol), Dem (Milan), Fefe Telavera (San Paulo/Madrid), Vova Vorotniov (Kiev), Escif (Valencia), Erica Il Cane (Bologna), Jiem (Lille), SickBoy (London) and Zosen (Barcelona). Their murals will reflect on the identity and existence of the post-1989 generation, as well as the celebrated anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Even though there was no concrete structure to pull down in Wrocław’s history, it is clear that there will be lots of walls to get rid of in the future. Just as the Berliners struggle with the demons of their history, the residents of Wrocław, marked with their own tempestuous past, will have to face problems to solve as well. World War Two and the post-war times had a powerful impact on the mentality of its citizens. What was – and still is – the city we live in? For young people, Wrocław is a blank sheet – they see the burden of its history as a challenge rather than a liability. If our life is conditioned by the past of the place we live in, then it’s the capital of Lower Silesia that appears to be a perfect place for such a confrontation.

“Breakin’ the Wall” is a voice of the generation of sensitive, tolerant people who are not afraid of change. To paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, “you must be the change you wish to see”. We show, we bare our contemporary walls, not necessarily those made of bricks and concrete, because the ones in our heads are much worse. The efficiency of our efforts to pull them down will be proof of how cosmopolitan Wrocław is. Or – to go a step further – a true test of our European identity.

The mural scene “Breakin’ the Wall” will be developed utill June. On various walls in Wrocław, in Nadodrze and in the surroundings – there will be several large murals created
as part of the project.
