Modern and Contemporary Photographs

Villa Grisebach Gallery, Berlin

The great names of the history of photography and high-quality individual prints mark Villa Grisebach’s spring auction in Berlin. On Wednesday, May 30, circa 200 lot numbers of modern and contemporary photographs will be sold.

The highlights of modern photography are Man Ray’s famous portrait shot „Picasso, Paris“ in a vintage print of 1933 (€ 15,000/25,000), Alfred Stieglitz’s „Portrait of Dorothy Norman“ from the 1930s (€15,000/25,000), two highly rare vintages from the estate of Otto Steinert: „Verspielter Punkt“, 1948 (€ 15,000/20,000) and „Magisches Boot“, 1957 (€ 12,000/15,000) as well as Martin Munkácsi’s „Spanish Dancers“ of 1930 (€ 12,000/18,000).

In circa 1905 Heinrich Kühn portrayed his son, Hans, the atmospheric dual-gum print (€ 5,000/7,000) almost appears more like a painting than a photograph. Jaromir Funke’s photograph of two children on a stairway from the early 1920s (€ 12,000/15,000) can be considered a work in the pictorialist tradition, whereas his architectural view, made only a few years later, is a prime example of the dynamic „Neue Sehen“ (€ 7,000/9,000). Two important artists of modern photography are represented in unusual vintages and early prints: Germaine Krull’s untitled shot of a man on the banks of the Seine of 1927-1928 (€ 9,000/11,000) and Ilse Bing’s „My shadow in Amsterdam Graacht“ of 1933 (€ 7,000/9,000).

Other highlights are: Andreas Feininger’s „Traffic on Fifth Avenue“ of 1948 in an unusual version of two vintages montaged together (€ 8,000/12,000), Albert Renger-Patzsch’s „Hyazinthe“ (circa 1955) in a print from the artist’s gift in 1961 to The Museum of Modern Art in New York (€ 10,000/15,000) as well as works by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Horst P. Horst, Arnold Newman, Jaroslav Rössler, Jeanloup Sieff, Else Thalemann, Umbo, Yva, and others.

The top lots of contemporary photography are Massimo Vitali’s large format „Les Menuires Grande“ (€ 20,000/25,000), Andres Serrano’s „Thinker“ (€ 18,000/24,000), Thomas Ruff’s „Portrait S. Kewer“ (€ 15,000/20,000), Elger Esser’s „60 Biarritz“ (€ 15,000/20,000), Bernd and Hilla Becher’s portfolio „Industriebauten“ (1968) comprising of 10 vintages from the early years of these photographers (€ 15,000/20,000), Martin Parr’s portfolio „The Last Resort“ (€ 12,000/15,000) and Peter Beard’s „Tsavo North“, with an estimate of € 8,000/10,000. Works by Rineke Dijkstra, Andreas Gursky, Pieter Hugo, Peter Lindbergh, Friederike Pezold, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Miroslav Tichy, and others, round out the high-quality contemporary offerings.
