THREE CAIRNS

In April 2003 MCASD will present a major exhibition of works by British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, consisting of photographs documenting his recently completed Three Cairns project and the creation of several site-specific installations in the galleries. Goldsworthyx{2019}s California cairn, situated on the front lawn of the museum and completed in January of 2002, is part of this important project encompassing three temporary sculptures and three permanent sculptures spanning the nation.

MCASD has worked in partnership with the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa and the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York to facilitate Goldsworthy in creating a project of monumental scope that connects three distinct placesx{2014}the East Coast, West Coast, and Midwestx{2014}through the use of outdoor stone sculptures. The site-specific indoor work will be made from natural indigenous materials, highlighting the particularities in the environmental traits of Southern California.

Andy Goldsworthy: Three Cairns was initiated by the Des Moines Art Center, and organized in partnership with MCASD and the Neuberger Museum of Art. The San Diego presentation of the exhibition is supported by a generous contribution from Sue K. and Dr. Charles C. Edwards. Additional funding has been provided by Mary Keough Lyman. The James Irvine Foundation, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, and the California Arts Council.
