Three exhibitions

21er Haus, Wien

Hans Schabus has conceived a room-spanning installation confronting the architectural order of the Modernist building with the coarseness and unpredictability of the outside world. 'The collection' is meant to offer new perspectives of art production in Austria. 'Busy' presents artistic positions that take a stand with regard to the development within society as a whole.

Hans Schabus. Vertical Endeavor
From Jun 1, 2012 until Sep 9, 2012

curated by Bettina Steinbrügge

For the first monographic exhibition in the recently reopened 21er Haus, the Austrian artist Hans Schabus (b. 1970) has conceived a room-spanning installation confronting the architectural order of the Modernist building with the coarseness and unpredictability of the outside world: abstraction encountering realism.

This tensional relationship opens up a wide field of problems and themes for discourse, ranging from the exploration of the subject of space and its accomplishment and the challenges the museum is facing as a concept to its role as an institution of real and intellectual space.

Resembling a threat to the conservatory efforts of a museum, material will virtually be “carted” into the exhibition room. Hans Schabus is interested in the principles of order in architecture and society and seeks to symbolically undermine and persistently question them. In this solo exhibition, his investigations will take on the form of a personal design for a museum.

The Collection
From Jun 1, 2012

Since the reopening of the 21er Haus, the Belvedere has had the necessary spatial facilities at its disposal to also present the museum’s holdings of contemporary art in a permanent fashion. The display of the collection, which is going to change its thematic focuses at larger intervals, is meant to offer new perspectives of art production in Austria and highlight both sidelines and the diversified spectrum of artistic movements.

This will provide insights into the peculiarities and characteristics of local art production and illustrate how the latter is connected to the mechanisms of international contemporary art in various ways. The goal is to view contemporary art in Austria under differentiated thematic aspects and with a broad eye.

BUSY
From Sep 20, 2012 until Jan 20, 2013

curated by Bettina Steinbrügge

Since the start of the twenty-first century, it has been possible to observe an increasing transformation of working and living relations toward a performance society oriented on efficiency, flexibility, and self-responsibility. Symptoms such as exhaustion and burn-out as the flipside of extreme demands made of people in the areas of work and leisure are also often observed. Whereas art was once considered a seemingly exotic counter model to achievement-oriented, heteronomous gainful employment; as a realm of freedom in contrast to the realm of necessity, it has developed before our eyes to a model of mobile and autonomous one-person firms, to the ideal project-related way of working. The group exhibition presents artistic positions that take a stand with regard to this development within society as a whole.

The exhibition is in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
