MONKEY WRENCHES AND HOUSEHOLD SAINTS

Von Lintel Gallery is proud to present MONKEY WRENCHES AND HOUSEHOLD SAINTS, an exhibition of new sculptures by John Newman.

These eccentric objects deploy a collision of unusual materials with seductive textures and high-key colors that engender a cascade of diverse images, associations and references offering up a unique sculptural experience.

Gourds and bamboo, cast lead crystal and mirrored plexiglas, tulle and wool gabardine are but a few of the materials used. How the pieces are made and what they are made of is often a mystery "creating a space in which unexpected conjunctions are the rule, in which theory bows to intuition and humor and associative imagery runs riot", writes Raphael Rubinstein in a recent essay.

Somewhere between the intimacy of a Japanese tea cup and the outrageousness of cartoon computer animation, these small scale objects present themselves like votives or artifacts,"objects with an extreme degree of specificity but barely any descriptive relationship to the real world" writes Nancy Princenthal in an essay on Newman's recent sculptures.

Grace Glueck of the NY Times, in a review of Newman's last exhibition, ended by writing "But enough description of the indescribable". For over twenty years John Newman has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Asia. His sculpture and drawings are represented in numerous museum collections worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney. He has been commissioned to make large scale outdoor sculptures for Storm King, Genral Mills, and Grounds for Sculpture. And he has recently been commissioned to create a gigantic sculpture hanging in mid-air suspended on cables for the newly renovated train station for the city of Richmond Virginia.

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 1, from 6-8 PM
