A new sculpture installation by Cathy Ward & Eric Wright. A site specific installation that is based on a reinvention of the Maypole, integrating elements from the European Mayday celebration and associated traditional rites. The sculptures, which are composed from collected paraphenalia and feature over 2 miles of ribbon, embrace mock Tudor styles and invoke traditional festival mayhem.
Standpoint Gallery is pleased to present a new sculpture installation by Cathy Ward & Eric Wright. This collaborative duo have over the past 5 years created installations of staged metaphorical woods through which they explore threads of European folk culture and tradition, from original forms through to their mutated, kitsch, contemporary manifestations.
Opening on Mayday and running throughout the month, Gathering in the May is a site specific installation that is based on a reinvention of the Maypole, integrating elements from the European Mayday celebration and associated traditional rites. The sculptures, which are composed from collected paraphenalia and feature over 2 miles of ribbon, embrace mock Tudor styles and invoke traditional festival mayhem. But revellers beware, as the frivolous facade belies its dark heart.
The opening night, Mayday, features a guest appearance from performance artist Andrew Bailey. His unique personification of the 'Green Man' is an act which promises the 'unexpected' and is not to be missed. Bailey has also provided a specially commissioned audio work for Gathering in the May, which will be playing throughout the exhibition.
