symposium will feature disucussions on three themes: the history of the grid
in contemporary art and culture; the relationship of the body to the grid;
and current theories on how to "get around" the grid.
Dan Cameron (Senior Curator, New Museum, and curator of Living Inside the
Grid), Benjamin Weil (Curatorial Chair, Eyebeam Atelier, and Curator of
Media Arts, SFMOMA), and Manuel DeLanda (Adjunct Associate Professor of
Architecture, Columbia University), will moderate discussions with guest
speakers. Confirmed speakers include Ollivier Dyens, artist, essayist, and
poet; Dr. Susan Kozel, performer, choreographer and writer; Laura Kurgan,

University; and Peter Halley, artist and publisher of Index Magazine.
Talking About Living Inside the Grid is organized by Anne Barlow, Curator of
Education and Media Programs at the New Museum, with the assistance of Defne
Ayas and Jessica Sucher.
About Living Inside the Grid
Twenty-four emerging international artists describe the myriad challenges of
living in a world increasingly controlled by institutions, technology, and
media, by expanding upon the motif of the grid. Living Inside the Grid fills
the entire New Museum from February 28-June 15, 2003, with thirty-six
computer-based works, videos, photographs, drawings, and sculptures,
including many large-scale installations that are conceived especially for
the museum. The exhibition is organized by Dan Cameron, senior curator at
the New Museum, and marks his first group exhibition at a U.S. museum since
1982.
