Conjuring for Beginners

Project Arts Centre, Dublin

The exhbition occupies three spaces of PAC: the Space Upstairs will become a giant gallery filled with sculpture on an enormous scale by Sam Keogh; the Cube will be home to a trio of artworks, light, sound and video installations by Janice Kerbel, Zbynek Baladran Susanne Philipsz; and in the gallery works from Daniel Dewer & Gregory Gicquel Angela Fulcher.

This summer Project Arts Centre will throw open its doors, presenting three exhibitions in all three spaces – the Gallery, and our two performance spaces; Space Upstairs, and Cube.

In a large-scale celebration of the visual arts, the Space Upstairs will become a giant gallery filled with sculpture on an enormous scale, by one of Ireland’s most promising young artists Sam Keogh; the Cube will be home to a trio of artworks, light, sound and video installations by Janice Kerbel (CA/UK), Zbyněk Baladrán (CZ) and the 2010 Turner Prize winning artist Susanne Philipsz (UK); and in the gallery the final piece of the exhibition will be a scene created through a collection of sculptures, with works from Daniel Dewer & Grégory Gicquel (FR), Angela Fulcher (UK/IE) and Ruth E. Lyons (IE).

The call of “overture and beginners” by a stage director prompts a flurry of activity, the call for ‘beginners’ warning actors to be on stage before the curtain rises. These beginners are both sculpture and tableaux: frozen in their places, creating the illusion that time is about to be released from its inert pause, the show about to begin. Exhibitions are also shows, but with durations that stretch over weeks rather than hours and with a cast and crew who are fixed in their animation, in tableaux, loops and scenes. Both in the space of theatre and in the scorching light of the white cube, artists become conjurers who create images experiences and illusions with their apparatus. –Tessa Giblin, Curator of Visual Arts at Project Arts Centre

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of talks and special events, more details to be announced soon.

Supported by The Irish Times.

Space Upstairs Theatre:
Terrestris, Sam Keogh, (Ireland), 2012, newly commissioned sculpture installation
This is the first time that such an installation by a visual artist has been mounted in Project’s cavernous theatre, and Project has been delighted to commission the inspiring young Irish artist Sam Keogh to navigate its maiden voyage.

Cube:
Night of the World, Zbyněk Baladrán (Czech Republic), film installation
Kill the Workers!, Janice Kerbel (Canada), play for theatre lights
I See a Darkness, Susan Philipsz (UK), sound installation
The theatre which forms the apparatus for this exhibition is notionally empty, with all seating and sets removed. Zbyněk Baladrán’s short film installation Night of the World is focused on the moments before a film begins, Janice Kerbel’s Kill the Workers! is a play performed solely by theatrical lighting, and Susan Philipsz sound installation I See a Darkness is an aural experience that gradually translates into sculpture. The exhibition-in-repertory is, like much theatre, a durational experience.

Gallery:
Daniel Dewar & Grégory Gicquel (France), Angela Fulcher (UK/Ireland) and Ruth E. Lyons (Ireland)
The capsized reality of the island scene – grounded by a swarming, black, neoprene wetsuit sculpture by Ruth Lyons, and roofed by a billowing, multi-coloured tent, hanging sculpture by Angela Fulcher – is a place where objects, artefacts and artworks exist contrary to their original material construction. Like the illusionist’s apparition, images resemble gigantic totemic necklaces or reified tribal garments, and the conviction of the exotic or other is as imaginary as the island itself.
