Smart Project Space presents an evening with sound performances
A monthly series in which the boundaries between music and art will be explored.
Organized in collaboration with Stichting Mixer
Tuesday May 13, 20.30 hrs.
Boca Raton is the ongoing musical project of Martijn Tellinga. Since 1999, it is
moving along the edges of synthesized sound and the concrete, acoustic world of
sound and it's recordings. The abstraction, or rather reflection of these
concrete sources through electronic synthesis and manipulation, creates an alias
in sound which shares the associative and narrative character of the everyday
soundtrack surrounding us. However, it is hardly to be recognised as such; it
has a new appearance or identity if you like, but still lives on the same
fundaments. By using elements of both worlds, it's musical form shows the
integration and co-existence of natural -unstaged- sound and it's artificially
created reflection.
More than relying on melody, harmony and rhythm, these sound-works are
constructed from the fundamental building-blocks of music: texture, volume and
time-elapse. A composition is made through arranging and re-arranging elements,
big and small, by using and selecting their characteristics. Once recorded or
captured, the nature of the sounds will hardly be changed; the musical context
determines which elements are emphasized or scrambled and therefore, make the
music.
DUUL_DRV is S. Arden Hill, a minimalist sound maker and painter living in the
intersecting and isolated climate of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As sound maker
his compositions attempt to fuse the aesthetics and method of his painting with
the dynamics of sound. By layering sounds actualized in digital software with
edited field recordings, duul_drv creates visual compositions that have been
paralleled to camping, scuba diving, long drives on hot days, and watching
bubbles floating outside a window. The "dusty and cracked" texture that's
found in these compositions can be attributed to the overwhelming sense of
location that Winnipeg offers the artist. From an article written for The Wire's
'global ear: Winnipeg' - issue 218, Hill offers, Winnipeg feels old and run
down, more like a prairie town than a prosperous city. The town gives him the
impression that we are living through old photographs found in flea markets, and
objects of nostalgia. This aesthetic can be heard in the quiet stretched sounds,
the dull hiss of the crackling white noise, and the fragments of constructed
beats.
