comunicato stampa

Esther Schipper is pleased to present Model Studies, the fourth solo exhibition of works by Thomas Demand. Demand is known as the artist that photographs his own paper or cardboard models, which he then destroys. For the first time, Model Studies shows large-scale photographic prints that are not based on the artist’s own models.

The exhibition is centred around 12 architectural models of John Lautner (1911-1994), which Demand discovered during his residency at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Taken from various angles, the artist depicts close-ups of Lautner’s organically curvaceous resident-buildings that were largely built along the Californian coast. Without implementing any trompe l'œil, the resulting images are both abstract and intimate.

Thomas Demand was born in 1964, in Munich. From 1987-89, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich and between 1989 and 1992 at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. In the early 1990s he went to London and studied at Goldsmiths’ College. Parts of the exhibition Model Studies were shown at the beginning of the year at Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (UK).

Parallel to this exhibition, Sprüth Magers, Berlin will present Thomas Demand’s 2012-film Pacific Sun.
