Con la mostra dedicata all’opera tarda di Edgar Degas, la Fondation Beyeler organizza la prima esposizione delle opere del celebre pittore nella Svizzera degli ultimi vent’anni. È inoltre la prima mostra dedicata all’ultima fase della sua produzione, momento culminante di una parabola artistica straordinariamente produttiva, protrattasi per oltre sessant’anni.
Nell’opera tarda giunge a compimento l’esperienza artistica di Degas, l’audace pioniere che, con i colleghi e amici più giovani Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso e Henri Matisse, caratterizzò profondamente il modernismo. A dispetto della grande popolarità di cui gode la sua arte, le mostre dedicate a Degas si concentrano per lo più sul periodo impressionista (1870 ca. – 1885) o su singoli aspetti della sua opera.
Il progetto espositivo prende avvio da due pastelli appartenenti alla collezione della Fondation Beyeler: i capolavori Colazione dopo il bagno (Il bagno), realizzato tra il 1895 e il 1898, e Tre danzatrici (gonna blu, corpetto rosso), del 1903 circa, lasciano immediatamente intuire la radicalità e modernità dell’opera tarda del pittore.
Questa grande mostra, con oltre 150 opere esposte, presenta i soggetti e le serie più importanti nell’ultima fase produttiva di Degas: dalle celebri figure di danzatrici ai nudi femminili, ai fantini e cavalli, fino ai paesaggi e ai ritratti. Comprende tutte le tecniche usate dal maestro: pittura, pastello, disegno, litografia, scultura e fotografia. Più di ogni altro artista del suo tempo, Degas si confrontò con una grande varietà di mezzi espressivi. Nella sua opera tarda, la pittura tenue e delicata della fase impressionista lascia posto a un’originalissima volontà di sperimentazione e a un ossessivo impulso creativo.
La mostra è a cura di Martin Schwander, curatore ospite, assistito da Michiko Kono, Associate Curator della Fondation Beyeler. Per la Fondation Beyeler, Martin Schwander ha in precedenza curato la mostra “Venezia – da Canaletto e Turner a Monet” (2008/2009).
Tra le principali istituzioni che hanno prestato le loro opere figurano: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Kunstmuseum di Basilea; Tate, Londra; Bayerischer Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Monaco; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Musée d’Orsay, Parigi; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington; Kunsthaus, Zurigo, nonché celebri collezioni private d’Europa, America e Asia.
Il catalogo, in inglese e tedesco, è pubblicato dall’editore Cantz Verlag di Ostfildern. Contiene una prefazione di Sam Keller e Martin Schwander, una conversazione con l’artista Jeff Wall e saggi di Carol Armstrong, Jonas Beyer, Richard Kendall, Martin Schwander e Mareike Wolf-Scheel. For the first time in Switzerland and southern Germany in twenty years, the Fondation Beyeler is presenting an exhibition of Edgar Degas (1834 –1917), one of the most renowned French painters of the late nineteenth century. At the same time, this is the first exhibition anywhere to be exclusively devoted to his rich and various late work, which commenced in about 1886. This period marked the artistic apotheosis of a daring pioneer of modernism.
Although Degas's art enjoys extreme popularity, exhibitions generally focus on his Impressionist phase (c. 1870 –1885) or on certain aspects of his oeuvre. The Fondation Beyeler show, comprising more than 150 works, covers all the themes and motifs that marked his late phase – fascinating depictions of dancers and female nudes, jockeys and racehorses, and surprising landscapes and portraits. All of the media Degas employed are included: painting, pastel, drawing and prints, as well as sculpture and photography. Experimenting like no other artist of his day with diverse forms of expression, Degas created his sensuous late work in an obsessional ecstasy of color in which past and present, things seen and remembered, entered an indissolubly interwoven whole.
The exhibition unites masterworks from the collections of renowned European, North American and Asian museums. Especially important are the numerous loans from outstanding private collections. These are often works that have not been on public view for decades.
