Warsaw Gallery Weekend

Different venues, Warsaw

17 of the most active contemporary art galleries and foundations - those already established at international art fairs or projects, and new spaces bringing on fresh, ambitious agendas - welcome the public to an art initiative and programme of special events that emphasise the diversity and broad character of Warsaw's artistic lifeline.

comunicato stampa

Over the past ten years Warsaw has sprung up from virtual zero to become a major focal point for contemporary art and its representatives in this part of Europe.

The Warsaw art scene is among the most dynamic in Europe, with many of the artists living and working here gaining substantial renown on the international scene. The institutional platform is also quite strong with regard to the global art circuit, with a growing crowd of collectors and a rise in public funds dedicated to new art. All this has made into Warsaw a hub of vital energies and unique possibilities.

17 of the most active contemporary art galleries and foundations - those already established at international art fairs or projects, and new spaces bringing on fresh, ambitious agendas - welcome the public to an art initiative and programme of special events that emphasise the diversity and broad character of Warsaw's artistic lifeline.

Recognised artists from the international arts scene (e.g. Paweł Althamer, Kitty Kraus, Willem de Rooij, Slavs and Tatars, Société Réaliste) present their latest projects, alongside special curatorial projects centred around the classics of Modernism (e.g. Hans Bellmer, Bruno Schulz) and newly-rediscovered photographers of post-war photography (e.g. Marek Piasecki, Wojciech Zamecznik). Artists of the younger generations (eg. Wojciech Łazarczyk, Grzegorz Sztwiertnia, Christian Tomaszewski, Anna Zaradny) also have a significant presence, along with some of the most intriguing debuts of today (Iza Koniarz).

Visitors at the Warsaw Gallery Weekend have a chance to meet with two seasoned European collectors of contemporary art: Christian Boros and Wilhelm Schürmann to discuss the business of art, while some of Warsaw's most important art institutions host special events: the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Centre for Contemporary Art and the Zachęta National Gallery.

September's Warsaw Weekend sets the tone for a new artistic trail on the dynamically-evolving urban landscape, while stoking ambitions to inscribe itself into the pan-European calendar of contemporary art events as an annual festival of art and artists, the galleries and people who support and promote them, as well as a place for new discoveries and interaction, a place for the exchange of vital energies generated by the local community, its creative potential and its ever-widening public.
