This large scale exhibition of David Maljkovic (Rijeka Croatia, 1973) will present an overview which spans from his early work up to the present day and includes the Scene for New Heritage Trilogy. This epic series of films, drawing and collages is an important element of the Van Abbemuseum 's collection.

In his installations, videos, and collages, Maljkovic is concerned with aspects of the eventful history of his country. The far-reaching consequences of the transformation from a communist to a capitalist social system and the linked economic and cultural impacts form the subtext of his artistic production. Maljkovic's work often centres on monuments and pavilions built during a period of Yugoslavian post-war optimism in the 1960s and '70s that have now been neglected or forgotten. Maljkovic will create atmospherically and architecturally charged installations to both house and interpret his own works and to engage with the classic location of the van Abbe's old building.

The series of installations at the Van Abbemuseum are staged as a subtle and elegant operation of disruption where the viewer is invited to go on a speculative journey into the space marked for art, experiencing a variety of visual and aural encounters. The artist will present atmospherically and architecturally charged installations to both house and interpret his own works, staging a series of encounters between viewer, artwork and the classic location of the Van Abbemuseum's old building.

Starting at the Van Abbemuseum, Sources in the Air will continue to BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK, and GAMeC in Bergamo, Italy, having a distinctly different architectural form in each venue. Taken as a whole, this will be the artist's most comprehensive survey to date. Trained at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and now living in Zagreb, Maljković has exhibited extensively internationally.

A major new publication, titled Sources in the Air, is launched at the opening, which will serve as the conceptual linchpin for this travelling exhibition. Designed by Mevis & van Deursen (Amsterdam) and distributed by JRP Ringier, it will include a main essay by Anselm Franke, with contributions from Charles Esche, Annie Fletcher (both Van Abbemuseum), Alessandro Rabottini (GAMeC), Alessandro Vincentelli (BALTIC), and Andrea Viliani (Fondazione Galleria Civica). The publication is edited by Nick Aikens (Van Abbemuseum).

This exhibition is a collaboration with the Baltic Art Centre Newcastle which will take the exhibition in January / February 2013. It will be accompanied by a publication.
